armed guards don't even necessarily do this to avoid breaking the law, they do it because bringing weapons into some ports legally is more expensive than just ditching them and getting new ones.

if you want to bring a rifle on your boat internationally (totally understandable, so would I) there is a simple way to avoid legal consequences. Just do what armed guards on merchants often do before entering less permissive ports: throw it in the ocean and buy a new later.
