Cerebus by Dave Sim is one of the most long-winded, fantastically incomprehensible, and awfully gross comics ever made. It is the weirdest comic I have ever read, and it will probably remain that way forever. Let's talk about it 🧵

I really want to make a thesis on Cerebus one day. Maybe for a master's degree research or just a passion project in my spare time. Just an article that analyzes most of the cultural influences this book had. Would be extremely daunting but hey that's the fun part

Nick Dragotta is going to be the template for a whole generation of comic artists The claustrophobic yet clear panel layouts, the imperfect, sketchy punk rock poster style of the inks, the *extremely* modern use of digital brushwork Just insanely “now” comic book art

I dig this story because it accurately humbles Gargan with how powerless he actually was with the symbiote. During this period when the symbiote became uncontrollable people like Gargan and Flash needed to take serums to be remotely in control. Fun to see this callback here

Being ignored hurts… especially when I really need help. A word from you or a little support would mean a lot to me. If you see this, leave even a dot https://t.co/vI7lxfNhUc

And what I mean by this moment being "effective" more than anything else is how most of these panels are very condensed, lacking a lot of details and even having funny limitations such as Bruce looking like a star due to the panel sizes. Yet they work perfectly sequentially

This panel trending is proof that comic art doesn't need to be "pretty" more than it needs to be effective. In the end, we should be more preoccupied with how well the storytelling is able to flow. Like this page is an amazing showcase of Dragotta's skill for drawing action

...Past Bruce, who saw Waylon give his all and realized the power of placing trust in those you love. And Selina, who wouldn't let the kind-hearted soul she once met be destroyed by Gotham's corruption

Absolute Batman is this incessant desire to not give up on the world. Bruce may lose himself in certain instances by letting this wish overpower his own life, but his support system can guide him back. Ultimately, Batman won't stop believing the world can be saved. Like...

...from abandoning his humanity and doing what Alfred and the system begged him to be (even if inadvertently): a replacement. Bruce and Waylon beat the odds because of the people who believed in them, stopping them from being victims of the injustice they're up against. (+)

It's poetic that Bane's demise happened because of the overusage of Venom. He relied so much on his power (and his mission) that eventually it consumed him in its entirety. While for Bruce, his support system didn't allow him to become the monster Bane was. Selina saved him...

Bane was forged to embrace and continue the war against a free world, expecting that one day he was ought to be replaced. Batman also embraced the war, but because of what this eternal conflict represents on his side. He does it for a better world, for his loved ones. (+)
