If you want to compare it to dogs... Well those took thousands of years and their original ancestor, the wild species, already died out.

Whoever thinks that wild animals that behave tamely are domesticated will also be the person who ignores behavioral disturbances, destruction & aggression against humans or cries out in total surprise when it happens. Domestication takes many many gens of selective breeding.
