NDP Leader Rachel Notley on Alberta's reopening plan:
"I have questions about how the Premier decided on this pace, and whether it was informed by science, or simply by working backwards from the first day of the Calgary Stampede."
PM Trudeau on Premier Kenney's equalization formula concerns:
"He was part of the very government that negotiated and put in place the actual equalization formula that is there now.
He could probably explain better what it is that he disagrees with his younger self on."
In B.C., there was a 201% increase in first dose vaccinations in the days after the passport system was announced.
In Alberta, there was a 15% increase in first dose vaccinations in the days after the $100 payment for unvaccinated people was announced.
Mayor Nenshi points out: the infection rate in India is approximately 200 people per 100k. In Calgary today, it's approximately 520 cases per 100k.
"I really want people to understand where we are at."
Mayor Nenshi speaking today about Premier Kenney's answer to a question about renaming schools a few weeks ago:
"He started railing against what he called 'cancel culture,' forgetting that the residential schools were actually an attempt to cancel culture."
If you own or manage a restaurant in Alberta and plan to continue to require proof of vaccination after the REP is cancelled tonight, I would like to speak to you. My DMs are open and my email is in my bio.
Mayor Nenshi on the Green Line:
"I will tell you unequivocally that the federal government - the previous Harper government and the Trudeau government - were in no way the cause of any delays on this project. That is all the Government of Alberta. It is all Premier Kenney."
Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi on the attack in London, Ontario:
"Don't tell me your thoughts are with the Muslim community. Tell me what you are going to do about racism in this country?"
"This is not just a Muslim tragedy," Nenshi says. "It is a Canadian tragedy."
Reminder: The Government of Alberta took the unusual step of demanding Edmonton host at least five of Canada's 10 allotted 2026 FIFA World Cup games. It also demanded Edmonton host two round of 32 or round of 16 knockout games.
Edmonton is now shut out of the World Cup.
We reached out to the premier's office to ask exactly where the below grocery stores are located, and when the pictures were taken. We have not heard back.
I’m getting pictures like this from grocery stores across Alberta this morning.
This is turning into a crisis. It requires immediate action by the Canadian & US governments.
Naheed Nenshi in his campaign announcement:
"Danielle Smith and her government are not only incompetent, they're immoral and they are dangerous. The only things they know how to do are pick fights and waste money."
BREAKING: Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announces the next phase of removing almost all restrictions (including masking requirements) will go ahead on March 1.
We have yet to hear from Alberta's Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Devin Dreeshen today, who volunteered for Donald Trump's campaign in 2016 (before Dreeshen was elected). Dreeshen has never denounced the President. I have reached out to his office.

BREAKING: K-Days 2021 has been cancelled.
"Rather than having an event simply to have it in 2021, we want to work with our stakeholders and partners on relaunching K-Days in 2022," organizers say.
The Calgary Stampede is supposed to occur two weeks before K-Days.

Wow. Since the AHS signup portal opened this morning, more than 100,000 millennials have already booked vaccination appointments. Incredible showing from the 30+ group.
I explain this in detail here:
You may dislike everything about the convoy but you should still be worried about this. Canada does not hold non-violent people in jail indefinitely before trials for non-violent crimes.
There are 1,014 people with COVID in hospital in Alberta. It's the first time more than a thousand people have been in hospital with COVID since late May.
In the Legislature this afternoon, Premier Kenney said:
"The NDP is starting to sound like the anti-vax party. They've become the anti-science party."
Every member of the NDP caucus has been vaccinated. The UCP cannot say the same (or if they can, they haven't).

Interesting moment from today's news conference with Premier Kenney:
The event didn't begin with a land acknowledgement, but Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, who spoke after Kenney, decided to give one.
"For me personally, the land acknowledgement is very important," Sohi said.
Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi on the city's mask mandate staying in place until at least July 5.
"You can't walk away from a forest fire when there's still some embers burning."
Hey Albertans, if you happen to be going to a grocery store today, could you reply to this Tweet with where you shopped, and a couple pictures of what the shelves looked like?
"Clearly the move to endemic was too early," Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says. It's the closest she's come today to saying the Government of Alberta made a mistake with its "Open for Summer" plan.
This is really dangerous and inappropriate. It's one thing to criticize a story you don't like, but the Premier of Alberta is clearly trying to imply that the CBC and the NDP are working together to undermine her image. That is patently false.
Personal news: today is my last day at CTV Calgary. It has been an honour to work with the team here, and a pleasure to tell stories about my hometown, and this beautiful province.
On Monday, I start a new adventure.
At 11 a.m., the Alberta Teachers' Association will announce plans to halt the implementation of Alberta Education's K-6 curriculum. Most school boards in Alberta have already said they won't participate in the pilot program.
2.5 years into this pandemic, have you avoided COVID-19? If you have never tested positive, I would like to speak with you for a

story. My DMs are open!
Premier Jason Kenney at the Calgary Petroleum Club today:
"There appear to be a bunch of experts on the Delta variant at city hall," he said. "I didn't know there were so many epidemiologists in public life."
The premier takes issue with Calgary keeping its mask mandate.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke about providing help to Alberta again this morning:
"For Alberta, we continued reaching out to the province through the weekend. We’re offering whatever help they need to get the situation under control and keep Albertans safe."
Former Calgary Mayor
@nenshi
on
@CTVNews
today:
"Those referenda were ridiculous in every way. They are purely attempts by Premier Kenney to save his political skin by focusing on how evil the federal government is."
"If I were the Prime Minister, I would just ignore it."
Premier Kenney has been asked several questions tonight about whether he takes personal responsibility for Alberta's fourth wave. He has not once answered the question.
NEW: the Calgary Board of Education will mandate masking indoors for all staff and kindergarten to Grade 12 students for the start of the 2021-22 school year.
Rachel Notley says Premier Jason Kenney is being "intentionally stupid" by claiming paid sick leave is a "job killing policy."
"It's a life saving policy," she says.
Infectious disease expert Dr. Ilan Schwartz on the health measures Alberta introduced last week:
"I would argue it's worse than doing nothing, because now it's going to delay the government from taking definitive action for at least two weeks."
NEW: Alberta RCMP say that on the way to an anti-carbon tax protest site in the Crowsnest Pass, five large farm tractors caused a multi-vehicle collision.
"They refused to stop for police when a traffic stop was attempted. Our investigation into this incident is ongoing."
Don't tell me to follow the province," Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi says about Calgary's mask bylaw.
"I heard people say Dr. Hinshaw makes the decisions. She does not. Cabinet makes the decisions."
There are 320 people currently being hospitalized for COVID-19 in Ontario.
There are 487 people currently being hospitalized for COVID-19 in Alberta.
Ontario's population is more than 3x higher than Alberta's.
The Alberta NDP are holding a news conference today to call on Premier Jason Kenney to appear publicly and address the rising hospitalization rates due to COVID-19. Kenney last spoke in public on Aug. 9, and is on vacation, according to his press secretary.
During this press conference, CMOH Dr. Deena Hinshaw is wearing a mask. Every time she goes to the podium, she takes it off and sanitizes her hands. When she leaves the podium, she puts it back on. On the other hand, Education Minister Adriana LaGrange is not wearing a mask.
One of the 26 deaths announced today was a male in his 20s in the Calgary Zone. Alberta Health says he had no pre-existing conditions. He was unvaccinated.
@CTVCalgary
Strange that Alberta hasn’t gone back to reporting COVID case data on the weekends, giving the fourth wave. They stopped after the Premier’s “Open for Summer” announcement.
At this point, it appears Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw will not be holding any sort of COVID-19 news conference today. But, a group of Alberta doctors have taken it upon themselves to hold their own informational updates, starting today at 4 p.m.:
NEW: both the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School Division will observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. School will not be held.
The Government of Alberta has said it would not recognize the new federal holiday.
Trudeau says he wants to respond direct to Kenney's remark.
"It's not about treating one province differently. If Alberta already had childcare at $8 a day across the province, we would have taken an approach similar to Quebec."
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says Alberta did not get a daycare deal like Quebec, which it wanted.
"The federal government functionally refused to provide the same conditions to Alberta," he says in French.
@CTVCalgary
UPDATE: Alberts Health now says it has granted exemptions to rodeos in Airdrie, Cochrane and Ponoka. "Exemptions are granted due to the event’s importance to the local economy and community. "

103 Alberta doctors have signed a letter to Premier Danielle Smith and AHS Administrator John Cowell expressing concerns over the decision to revoke Dr. Deena Hinshaw's contract.
"Dr. Hinshaw has been prevented from working for AHS. This is entirely unfair and unprofessional."
Mayor Naheed Nenshi on residential schools:
"For those of you who watched the Friends reboot this week, think about how the last residential school in Canada was closed after that show was already on the air.
This is not ancient history."
@KevinCTV
Enjoy Kevin! The last week where you can report this useless information. It's not March 2020 anymore! Time to move on! What was the daily cancer diagnosis and deaths? How about cardiovascular disease?
Alberta Health estimates that the real COVID-19 case numbers are four times higher than what they detect through testing.
That would mean 12,111 new COVID infected people between Friday and Sunday.
@CTVCalgary
A survey of Alberta Teachers Association members finds 91% are unhappy with the province's draft K-6 curriculum. Over 3,500 teachers completed the survey between March 29 and April 7.
An RCMP spokesperson in Coutts says he is not aware of an assault or attempted assault on any of the officers.
This contradicts what Premier Kenney said yesterday during his news conference.
BREAKING: Premier Jason Kenney says people aligned with protesters at Coutts are assaulting RCMP officers. He says one vehicle tried to ram officers. He says at least 100 protesters are refusing to leave the border.
Watch:
"One of the things I have found regrettable about COVID from day one is the tendency to politicize it and turn it into a blame game," Premier Kenney says.
Danielle Smith in 2022:
"I have a non-binary family member, and I believe these decisions are very personal, and it should not be debated in public,."
"We shouldn't be making any child feel like the issues they're struggling with are something that's a political football."
NEW: the University of Alberta, University of Calgary and University of Lethbridge will require unvaccinated students to undergo regular rapid testing. Vaccinated students will be exempt. And, masks must be worn in all public indoor areas where distancing isn't possible.
Here's a chart showing active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta during the pandemic. I drew a red line on the graph to represent the period in August when Education Minister Adriana LaGrange filled in as acting Health Minister for Tyler Shandro, who was on vacation.
I asked Mayor Nenshi his advice for Albertans confused by Premier Kenney's change between arguing that more restrictions wouldn't work, and a day later announcing new restrictions.
"Stop paying attention," he said.
"all that matters is we stay safe, and keep each other safe."
I did not get to ask a question today. Here's what I was going to ask: "Premier, Alberta currently has the most active cases of COVID-19 in the country. Do you take personal responsibility for Alberta getting hit harder than any other province by this disease?"
