Ms. Davis’s story is not an outlier. It’s a reflection of the state of our housing infrastructure: precarious at best, life-threatening at worst. We need to massively scale up home repair programs, hold landlords accountable for basic safety, and invest in social housing.

A resource center is being set up at Steele Elementary School, and my staff is on the way to the scene to coordinate with the Red Cross, city workers, and residents.

I was devastated to learn that several buildings collapsed in my neighborhood this morning, killing one and injuring at least two of my neighbors. I urge people in the immediate vicinity to evacuate until authorities can confirm that the area is safe.

I hope that these federal charges will finally spur the investment we need to ensure safe conditions for all our children. This fight is not over until every child has a safe and welcoming school.

Our protests led to a five-year criminal investigation by the US Department of Justice, and yesterday, they announced criminal charges against the School District for failing to keep our kids safe from asbestos:

I was at McClure Elementary in 2020 when the school closed down due to asbestos. I was at my daughter’s school, SLA Beeber, in 2021 when the school closed down due to asbestos. I was at Frankford in 2023 when the school closed down due to asbestos.

From speaking out as a public school parent in 2018 to advocating for funding as an elected leader in Harrisburg in 2023, I have always fought for safe and healthy school buildings for our children. The dangers of asbestos in our schools are not new.

This is what we're able to accomplish when we put impacted people front and center in the legislative process. We have a new law that holds employers accountable and compensates workers directly when their rights are violated.

Wage theft is the largest form of theft in the country, costing working families billions in stolen wages. Under the POWER Act, Philly workers can hold employers accountable for wage theft and get substantial compensation for their losses.
