"Strange Quarks" is 1 of 3 poems from @keatingr in our 86th edition. And I could not write a better bite for it than he did in his sub form: This poem is inspired by true events. The ice cube tray, the tile, and the existential angst are all real.

when the anniversary of their deaths falls on Good Friday. In death, Jesus conquered injustice, persecution, oppression, and corruption. It is the death of Jesus that gives ultimate meaning to our lives, and even to our own inevitable deaths. We don’t celebrate death. .

They were eventually convicted nine years later in 2016. Those murders changes the trajectory of our lives. We remember their faithfulness and their sacrifice. And we remember that their deaths were not in vain. It is especially significant today….

The murderer who broke his neck trying to escape was being treated in a bed next to him. Eventually, I received news that Uğur had not survived. The murderer eventually recovered. The five murderers thought they were doing something noble for their country and their religion….

I rushed to the hospital behind the ambulance in a taxi. I waited in the hospital for a few hours while he was in surgery. While I waited, several divisions of police officers questioned me and asked me to identify Uğur from a bloody photo they took while doctors worked on him….

…and the building was taped off with yellow police tape. One of the murderers tried to escape from the third floor balcony; he fell and broke his neck on the sidewalk below. Tilmann and Necati were already dead when the police entered the office. Uğur was still alive….

…while he was trying to get inside. He called me to ask if I had seen Tilmann, Necati, and Uğur. He then called the police and I made my way downtown toward the office. By the time I arrived at the building, the police had already captured the five murderers….

…when five young Turkish men came to the office pretending to be interested in Christianity. The five attackers tied my friends to their desk chairs, tortured them, and eventually slit their throats. Another colleague of ours discovered that something was wrong in the office….

It was about this time of day on April 18th 2007 that three of my colleagues were brutally murdered where we were living in Malatya in eastern Turkey. Tilmann Geske, Necati Aydın, and Uğur Yüksel were working at the office of a Christian publishing company….
