Fred VanVleet, in partnership with University of Toronto is creating the “Fred VanVleet Scholarship,” which will support a Black or Indigenous student. The scholarship will provide four years of tuition and books based on financial needs.
The way
@realmikemilbury
said this so casually tells us exactly what time he’s BEEN on so no one should be shocked. But the way he went unchecked on-air and the silence from his peers in this industry. Phew we’ve got a ways to go
So Tim, in my public apology that you are calling for, how would you like it to to go?
“I’m sorry to that as a black woman I pointed out that you writing the n-word twice in your piece may be triggering or offensive.”
That work?
Kyle Lowry said he almost cried when he saw his boys doing his intro: “That got me going. Those are my babies, they're my world. That's a memory that's gonna last forever."
Just know when you see Black women in sports media you’re watching literal unicorns that have had to endure and overcome so much sh*t behind the scenes. So when we see each other up in here please understand why we love on each other so hard.
The Raptors and Lakers kneel for both the Canadian and the American national anthem. Very important acknowledgment that racism isn’t just an issue south of the border.
New security video has been released from that Game 6 altercation between Deputy Alan Strickland and Masai Ujiri. It will take you all of 15 seconds to identify who the aggressor was in this situation and hint : it ain’t Masai.
It’s amazing the amount of focus and talk about Diwali and it’s potential impact on Ontario’s Covid-19 numbers. Where was that energy when all that brazen gallivanting on Thanksgiving and Halloween took place not too long ago? I guess selective memory does hit different.
Norman Powell is a mood forever It’s been a treat to watch the player he has developed into as a Raptor but what’s always been impressive is just how much he has poured into the communities of Toronto with his UTG line. Portland is getting a good one.
I remember the day Black Panther came out. We made sure to pack up that theatre. By any means. This generation waited our lifetimes to see superhero that looked like us on screen.
Black women having to wake up this morning feeling heavy & exhausted but using whatever scrap of energy you have left in you to push through the day ... I see you and I love you fiercely.
Incredibly honoured to have been named as one
of
@Chatelaine
‘s Women of the Year. To be mentioned in the same conversation as the GIANTS on this list is wild.
I can promise you that when reading an article/ report that involves an athlete and domestic violence — not a single f is given about the athlete’s stats from last season.
Thoughts and prayers to people of colour in this city who know exactly what’s coming with police being given the go-ahead to just stop us without reason.
With rumours that Nike is unlikely to extend Kyrie Irving’s signature shoe deal beyond the 22-23 season, who should be next up for a signature shoe?
I’ll go first : Ja Morant
They say “never meet your heroes” and to that I call bullsh*t because I met Lisa LaFlamme and what I was met with was such warmth, encouragement and support over the years.
@LisaLaFlamme_
IS the bar. Period.
One thing about
@RjBarrett6
‘s mom is that she’s going to cheer on her son regardless. She’s been leading “Let’s go Raptors !” chants throughout the entire night.
Alex Trebek didn’t know it but he was also the host of “Screaming wrong answers at the TV” a hit I would star in alongside grandparents every single night growing up. There will never be another. Greatest game show host of all time
This is the job.I understand what I do... but I got to be honest it doesn't sit right watching player after player visibly shaken up and revisiting their trauma during media avails --and for what? to appeal to our humanity? Black people shouldn't have to do that.
Another noose discovered at a Toronto construction site.
A worker tells me “Black Lives Don’t Matter” can also be seen scrawled on washroom stalls at the site.
Details on the noose tonight on
@CBCToronto
@ 6
To those who think body-cams are the solution to police brutality and aggressive force.. please understand that we are well past the point of cops giving a damn if they’re on camera or not. Let’s not forget how many people were present when this all went down
I don’t even know what we’re discussing anymore when it comes to the support of Women’s professional teams in Toronto.
“Build it and they will come” - executives in their pr pitches
You built it
We showed up
Sold the events out
The next lift is on you
That Naomi has to disclose more of what she’s personally dealing with because some can’t handle when an athlete set a crystal clear boundary is shameful.
Two things can be true :
Steve Nash — yes, with no coaching experience is more than deserving of his job with the Nets
With 5 Black head coaches in a progressive league, we must also keep that same energy with Black candidates with no experience in head coaching conversations
This is terrorism. We need to name it. Devastated for the Muslim community who pour so much into our country just to be showed by vile humans that they are not welcome or safe in a place that they helped build.
London, Ont. police say they believe 4 people struck and killed Sunday were 'targeted because of their Islamic faith.' 20-year-old white man charged with 4 counts 1st-degree murder, 1 count attempted murder. Victims members of same family. Previous story:
Precious Achiuwa and Scottie Barnes are still stuck in Toronto thanks to weather-delays so they will not make this morning’s Rising Stars media availability. At this point the team is hoping they make it for the game.
Nick Nurse on Precious missing those late free throws:
“He’s worked really hard on his shooting and his free throw shooting this year. I’m really proud of him … I don’t want him to live in that play.”
Norm Powell and Fred VanVleet have both said that there have been conversations about boycotting. There is frustration that messages aren't getting across.
At Lord Dufferin PS field where alongside
@pennyappeal
,
@FredVanVleet
is gifting a ton of customized backpacks to the students.
This young man told me to pass along this message to Masai 😂😂😂😂 cc:
@Raptors
@Kayla_Grey
While you are entitled to your opinion you are just a sportscaster, not a lawyer, activist (a real one anyways) or politician. What does this have to do with Raptors or Canada?
A noose is disturbing enough but if this person had access to Bubba Wallace’s garage, imagine what else they could’ve done. This work is more than just being willing to amplify Black voices— you must also be willing to PROTECT Black voices too.
John , I am a black woman and the daughter of immigrant parents. More often than not, my race is the first thing that introduces itself in a room without people knowing what I do for a living. I will never just stick to sports.
This past year for me was incredibly challenging. Being praised for “speaking up” but as a Black woman in media there’s this level of anxiety I truly wish on no one. Fear. Hate mail. Vile tweets. Feeling like an only at times.Eventually it chips away at you.
#BellLetsTalk
I can only speak for myself here but when you talk about people that truly show up for you in this fight
@LeoRautins
has been an ally for me time after time.Allyship also includes the willingness to get checked and the commitment to STILL do the work anyways.
