I’d agree that there definitely is still a stigma, which is why we have to do better at normalizing different ways to do/support our life and learning. I also find it interesting that individuals with disabilities/differences have to “apply” for that support.
@KatyArnett It is - and by asking for accommodations, you often feel more excluded. I was ashamed to apply for accessible parking - needing accommodations still feels like a negative stigma in society. My disability is likely temporary once I have surgery but I won’t forget this experience.

I’m sorry it’s been a tough year for you, but I admire how you’re using it as a moment of reflection. Ableism is everywhere, isn’t it?.
@KatyArnett Your keynote presentation hit me in many ways because of my current circumstances. The discussion on ableism - I am experiencing this year with a whole new perspective due my disability. It’s made me look at how I teach Core French differently as well. Thank you!.

Way to meet the moment!.
When I was accepted to present at @CASLT_ACPLS , I wouldn’t have seen me joining from my bed w/ my dog. While a hip condition&surgery wait forced me to sidelines, Covid forced event to be virtual, becoming more inclusive. Ginny&I are enjoying keynote @KatyArnett #LWB2020LSF

For sure! My friend and regular collaborator @CJMady has found out why this is so often true!.
@KatyArnett discusses how ableism in a language program and how to teach supporting students of all needs. This q - my EAL students have been so hardworking - and often French come easier to them than English. #LWB2020LSF

Bonnes suggestions!

Oui! Tools that help students connect different modes of language are a great support. It can also help when Ss can adjust playback speed of audio or have power to re-listen.
@MmeCarbonneau @KatyArnett I used Google Read & Write and taught the students how to use it in French. Voice to text and having the text be read aloud helped a lot.

Also--use word banks, access to spell-checkers, a variety of assessment tools to ensure you can see that they understand the concept independent of the words' spelling.
@MmeCarbonneau @KatyArnett I relaxed on spelling and accents with my dyslexic students. Eliminate activities such as word search and anagrams - they just can't do them.

3/3: Recognize all Ss with dyslexia benefit differentially from supports.Ex: Dyslexie font works for some, but all-caps may work better for others. Color contrast works well for some, but not all. Ask the Ss about their learning, don't assume based on what's in the IEP/504.
2/3: Normalize using tech tools that are facilitating language production--speech to text plug-ins, voice typing that's multilingual. Focus on helping ALL students be resourceful communicators.

1/3: Remember that French, like English, is an opaque language; sound/symbol relationships are not consistent or clear across all words. To do well in either language, you need a strong memory. Helping Ss with more limited memory starts with simultaneous multimodal instruction.

#langchat #fle #fslchat Learned I will have a student this year with dyslexia. Can anyone point me in the direction of resources for language learning? Anything specific to French? @KatyArnett.
