I think you are so correct in naming place value as the tricky part. I always say place value is not a unit of study but a journey we take all year. We just all have to commit to teaching and developing it much better throughout the year.

You say, "When you know better, you do better." But the knowing & doing must be active. The doing is not a magical outcome of knowing. Orgs are full of racism people w/ power KNOW exists & CHOOSE not to abolish. That's an institutional injustice problem, not a knowledge problem.

Your attitude about mathematics will play a big role in shaping your students' attitude about mathematics. Their attitude will shape their identity with mathematics. Be open, vulnerable, honest, and curious. It's far more important than being correct and loaded with strategies.
