Celebrating the literary legacy of Katey Howes, a beloved kidlit author and bookish mom:
THE REINDEER REMAINDERS (7/16/24)
WHERE THE DEER SLIP THROUGH ('25)
Just met a “retired a long time ago” reading teacher. I asked for her best tip for encouraging kids to read.
“Well,” she says, “I had a big, burly guy carry a claw foot bathtub into my classroom and declared it the Reading Tub. After that, kids fought to climb in & read.” 🛁 📚
I’m having lunch with my 14 y.o., and she said to me, “Mom, you switching careers & making this author thing work has completely changed my attitude about my future. I can do whatever I want to do. And then I can change my mind and do something new. And nothing can stop me.”
@jslstories
Look at that! How did I never know about this as essential classroom furnishings?!?! The woman who told me about it taught in the 60’s and 70’s. I ❤️ that it’s still happening!
@mr_ian
My friend’s contact fell out on the floor of a bar. She located it and put it in her mouth to clean it off. She accidentally kind of inhaled it...choked and flapped for awhile...coughed it into her hand, looked at it critically, and put it BACK IN HER EYE.
Well, this has gotten more attention than I expected. If you’re looking for something to read in a tub - with water or pillows- you can find my children’s books available for sale or pre-order here:
My teen announced they were using they/them pronouns and everyone in their contacts under 18 immediately celebrated and validated them and the rest of us were slow and weird and we’ve got some work to do, so-called “grown-ups.”
My 3 kids -all ravenous readers- are more interested in rereading than in trying new books this spring. I totally respect this choice, & when I asked why, they were unanimous that they “didn’t want any more surprises right now” & “felt safe” with familiar books.
#raisingreaders
Well, this resonated!! If it does, please let the kids in your life know their 1st career choice is just that: 1 adventure. They get pressured to choose career tracks, majors, whole futures so early! Reassure them they can change. Remind them to stay open to possibility & passion
My author copies arrived - which means it’s time for a giveaway!

Gah! I had this issue with our landscape guy. I’d be the one to talk to him about mowing, mulching, taking out trees (and the snow blowing.) He’d email the estimate to my husband. Switched to a landscape service called Dirty Girls. Feeling good about it.
I used to look askance at TV and movie adaptations of books (I’m SUCH a book snob), but I’m married to a “nonreader” who is now excited about everything
@neilhimself
because of American Gods and I’m sorry I was judgey.
@EmilySeitz
I love that! One of my kids’ teachers had a home made “covered wagon” - sort of Oregon Trail style - in his classroom and the kids really got a kick from reading in there.
We’re ready for my daughter’s 12th birthday “camp in!” She’s been awesome planning and helping

12 yo just gave me THE BEST writer pep talk
Mom, it's like a potato. 1st, you dig it up. Then you shake the dirt off. You boil it down & it takes a long time but finally you just have the good stuff left. Then you pretty it up so people will eat it. Mom. You're good at potatoes.
I just forgot my own husband’s birthdate while picking up his prescriptions at a pharmacy drive-thru, and I started crying because I felt so stupid/stressed/anxious. The pharm tech was an ANGEL, talked me down calmly, told me it’s happening to everyone, and gave me a lollipop.
This kid got teased by 3rd grade girls because her clothes were “too crazy” and her hair “not in fashion.” She told them “I didn’t get dressed to please YOU.” I wish I had half her spunk at that age.
Thank you to everybody for their continued outpouring of love for Katey and her books. We are in the process of figuring out how to manage her social media sites presently. We look forward to continuing her tradition of promoting kidlit and celebrating her fellow authors.
My kids just set up a “free books and crafts” table at the end of our driveway. With rainy days on the way, they are worried other kids will be bored.
#raisingreaders
Two of my girls pooled their cash to buy an “inflatable dragon floatie” for their WINGS OF FIRE-loving sister for her birthday. It is...
Bigger than expected.
At the library tonight, my 12 yr old played Connect 4 with a kindergartner she’d never met, my 10 yr old helped a grown-up choose books for her sick daughter, and my 8 yr old read nonfiction out loud in the garden. I’m pretty sure they think they work there.
#raisingreaders
My kids made us an anniversary (19 years!) dinner at a restaurant called “Backyard” and my husband made a playlist and I am the luckiest girl in the world.
Absurdly excited to share the news: Where The Deer Slip Through will be illustrated by the legendary

& published by
#BeachLaneBooks
. Huge thanks to
@essiewhitewrite
and my fabulous critique partners - this couldn't have happened without you!
My kids decided that they are going to use catalog items as creative insults. Thanks to Plow & Hearth, they are running around, shouting at each other, “You double-bottomed ash bucket! You lighted boxwood accent!” 🤣
I just pushed my husband, kids, and dog out the door, telling them to take a long walk so I could do “secret holiday stuff.” Actually, I’m just planning on taking a shower with zero chance of interruption for the first time in 9 months. Merry Christmas to me!
I just discovered my local library lends out "vacation kindles" preloaded with either kids, classic, popular fiction or mystery titles. What an amazing idea!

Our schools have decided to delay opening 4 days to provide teacher training on live-streaming & online teaching, and to start the school year 100% online. I am relieved and thankful for all the deliberation, discussion, care and caution that went into these choices.
This is a public service announcement. Let your kids play with books. Touch them, stack them, pretend with them. They will love them even more. (Here’s my kids playing “Library” this morning.)

This illustration is perfect! I LOVE to read in the tub, but generally thought of that as a private (and wet!) endeavor. But if dry, clothed, classroom tub does the trick, too, who am I to argue?
Schools, if you can tell me how wide my daughter’s shoulder straps must be, if you can send kids home for wearing skirts too short, or forbid kids from using the playground unless they wear close-toed, laced-up shoes, you can ABSOLUTELY require masks.
Yesterday, my daughter slipped a little drawing into my pocket. When I found it, it felt like a hug. I told her so later, and now she’s drawing “hugs” to hand out to people at school “because we can’t hug and high-five, and everyone needs a hug right now.”
#RandomActsOfKindness
My 10, 12, & 14 y.o are in the kitchen, eating bagels & reading BINK AND GOLLIE.
“Do you still like BINK & GOLLIE, even though you are older?” I ask.
“Of course we do,” says my youngest. “They are like cheese. You don’t outgrow cheese just because you learn to like hummus.”
We are deeply honored to share that Katey’s book, Woven of the World, has received the award for the Atlantic region of
@scbwi
. This award celebrates Katey’s incredible talent and the lasting impact of her beautiful storytelling.
Heading out of hardware store with my 3 daughters pushing a cart filled with a chainsaw, axe, & safety goggles. A guy says "you don't see that everyday." My daughter replies "It's for our dad. Mom says he deserves it."
I feel like that could be taken the wrong way.

I stepped way back from social media over the holidays & returned to find I had over 5000 followers! Wow! To say TY, I'm giving away 5000 words of critiques. Follow/RT & reply with your 2019 writing resolution. 5 winners receive a PB critique (up to 1000 words.) Ends 1/6 11:59pm
So, I guess I’m some kind of turtle voyeur now, but I have got to share this! Box turtle just laid 6 eggs in my backyard! I’m researching how best to protect them from natural predators.
Before he left town for 2 weeks, my husband (sneakily) filled my gas tank, programmed the coffee maker to start up at 6am, returned my stack of books to the library, and put his sleep shirt over a pillow in our bed. That’s love right there.
Substitute asked my daughter's (virtual) class to share 1 thing they are good at. Mine hesitated, then:
"I'm good at commas. Like, really good."
Brief silence, then the whole class chiming in "she is! You should see her commas! She uses more than anyone!"
I'm so proud rn
My kid’s teacher said to make a mobile to show they understand physics principles. The mobile needs 5 items w a central theme. My kid chose the theme “Gnome Crimes.” They’ve made Coup Gnome, Arson Gnome, Larceny Gnome, & Fishing Without a License Gnome. Who’s got a 5th idea?
And if you are looking for organizations that inspire & uplift kids, can I recommend
@TheAuthorExp
? Their programs give underprivileged kids improved book access & strong relationships with story - both of which improve academic performance and social outcomes in the long term.
I am overjoyed to be working with

Husband just texted me from his office down the hall: Is everything ok? What happened?
Me: Fine. Why?
Him: I saw you getting out the Jack Daniels. Before noon...
😂😂😂 I was putting it in the crock pot with ribs and BBQ sauce!
Each of my kids made me a gift to celebrate my newest book, Rissy No Kissies: a felt “softie,” a clay creation, and an embroidered handkerchief. We all express ourselves in different ways, but the love is unmistakable!
@DianaLRendina
Love this. When mine were small, they’d climb into (or under!) laundry baskets with books to read; they imagined them as boats, train cars, zoo cages (!), who knows what - and then got lost in their books.
After weeks of work, my daughter finally revealed to me that she chose her science fair topic specifically so she could say “regurgitation” and disgust people all day. She’s such a joy.

She decided to make a ⭐️ for

I went down a rabbit hole (actually, a bog) for several hours this morning and have my first truly new book idea in months and I’m feeling really kind of drunk and wild on it.
I wrote a thing. I wrote it exceedingly quickly and that made me doubt the heck out of it. But my agent loves it and told me to trust it, and myself. Sometimes - very rarely, I’d say - magic happens quickly. Now, to find that magic a home.
Just ordered a stack of
#ownvoices
picture books (using recs from
@debreese
’s website) because my daughter’s class is starting a unit on Native American history and culture, and I want to support the teacher’s goal of investigating & celebrating modern, authentic Native voices.
Told my daughter it was chilly out.
“Yes, But is it regular chilly or autumn chilly?”
“What’s the difference?”
“Autumn chilly is when the air’s so crisp you want to bite it like a chip.”
“Baby, it’s autumn chilly out there.”
She busted out the door & skipped around the driveway.
I'm thrilled to share
@heathertbl
's stunning cover for our upcoming

, A POEM GROWS INSIDE YOU. It's a reminder that we all hold the seed of something wonderful inside us, just waiting for the right moment to bloom. Coming 10/4/22!
My family bought me a new cardigan for my birthday with big pockets. “How big?” you may ask. I can put my e-reader AND a paperback novel in one pocket and an entire box of Fig Newtons in the other pocket so bye-bye, I’ll be out of touch til I’m out of words & Newtons.
It is a truth universally recognized that if you finally make time to swing by the library for your holds, you will receive an email an hour later, letting you know more holds are in.
How to balance parenting & writing:
1. Carve out time dedicated to writing.
2. Get comfortable saying "no."
3. Buy everyone in your family 36 pairs of underwear
4. Make mismatched socks & wrinkled shirts fashion trends
5. Befriend your dust bunnies
6. Declare cereal a dinner food
Amanda Gorman. I can’t even explain how powerful this young woman, this bold voice, this tremendous performance were. My girls and I were clutching each others’ hands and sitting on the edges of our seats. “There is always light, if only we’re brave enough...to be it.”
Nothing to see here. Just some children’s authors signing books in a calm and dignified fashion.

Deborah C Mortimer, Frank Murphy, Lisa Papp
I just laid out a meat &cheese tray, fruit, veggies and hummus, homemade guacamole& chips, and shrimp with remoulade. My dad looked at it, said “nice spread” and then went to the fridge and made himself a white bread & Kraft singles sandwich. Merry Christmas!
Woke up with the worst anxiety I’ve had through this whole crisis. No particular trigger, and I’ve been doing “the right things” to keep my mental health balanced, but today it is kicking my butt. I’ll be medicating, meditating, and calling my counselor. Take care of yourselves.
Some days I feel bad I haven’t “done” much. I don’t eat much. Cook much. Watch much or read much. Looking back, I realize: those hours I thought were unproductive? I used them to process information and emotions, both of which are overwhelming lately. And that’s healthy & 💯 OK.
In a stream of consciousness that could only happen in a
#kidlit
household, my 10 yr old stared silently in the mirror at her freshly dyed hair. Just as I was starting to panic that I’d somehow ruined it, she said “where do you think
@AmeDyckman
gets her inflatable unicorns?”
So, I got braces to help treat my TMJ issues and if this didn't actualize my inner 14-yr-old, nothing can. Should I start writing MG? Stop smiling (at ALL?!?) Create a rhyming PB about things found in your teeth?
I hit 9K followers! (just as Twitter’s future seems dim.)
To celebrate I’m giving away a critique of a PB ms & $100 donation to the bookish nonprofit of your choice.
To enter: Follow, RT & reply w/ the org you’d donate to.
Bonus entry: follow me on IG @ kidlitlove
I cannot say how honored and happy I feel receiving this gorgeous clock plaque celebrating A Poem Grows Inside You as the 2023 Lee Bennett Hopkins Honor Book! TY to the incredible PA Center for the Book for all you do to boost, share, encourage & recognize children's poetry!
My daughter was standing on a small hill at the bus stop this morning, Slytherin cloak billowing in the 30mph winds (as one does), when a hawk swooped out of the sky & snatched something from the ground nearby. Without blinking an eye, she cackled, “Well done, minion.”

Sorry, tourmates! And huge TY to the Ben Franklin/Mindfair staff for your awesome book selections and kind welcome when I popped back in!
School visit coming up today & I’m suddenly a shaky, nervous wreck. Anxiety is like that, sometimes. Things you think you’ve gotten the hang of, things you thought no longer triggered you, with no warning will set you off all over again. Deep breaths. I can do this.

NOT to use the rhyming dictionary: it suggests you rhyme “heart” with “Rene Descartes” and “lobster tart” and suddenly your only purpose in life is to write a picture book where that can happen.
Almost-6th grader is curled up in bed with Dory Fantasmagory, The War That Saved My Life, and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.
“I know I’m going to read a lot of new books this year, so I want to give these ones some attention. Just so they don’t think I’ve forgotten them.”
Hey parents, teachers, doctors - everybody really- can we just default to “siblings” instead of “brothers and sisters” during conversations with/question for kids to normalize that not everyone fits those 2 options? So tired of kids having to explain that. Thanks.
Bedtime talk at my house:
“Mom, why is the Chosen One always a teenager? Why isn’t it, like, a 30-something mom with no shits left to give, who just tells the evil dragon to pull himself together and stop being so immature?”
Just walked by my 10th grader’s screen while she’s playing D&D via Zoom and one of her friends yelled out, “Hey, Mrs. Howes. Thanks for the book rec for Legendborn. I already finished it. What should I read next?”
Is this how librarians feel all the time?
Scribbled a note to myself in the middle of the night. Waking up this morning, I see it just says “sugar and freedom!” I wish I knew what I was thinking.

Absolutely! Several pantries near us get donations of sides of beef from local butchers/farms and venison from hunters who help local areas control overpopulation. Anyone can have a tough stretch in their life. That doesn’t mean they don’t deserve delicious, quality food.
Y’all, it’s a pandemic and I am a hermit who hates unnecessary social interaction but I invited a mom who was new to our town/schools and her 3 kids to my backyard for a socially distant swim & chat today & it went well & I feel like a freaking hero & also I need a glass of wine.
Just ate what was left of the french vanilla ice cream for lunch to make room in the freezer for my holiday grocery run. I do what I must for my family.
“Mom, are you friends with Kate DiCamillo, E.D. Baker, or Mary Pope Osborne yet?”
“Not yet, honey.”
“That’s ok. You keep writing, mom. One of these days they’ll want to meet you.”
*to temper how sweet this is, pls keep in mind these are her 3 faves & she has ulterior motives*
