“If England get beaten, so will she.”
Holy moly this is a powerful poster from
@_NCDV
😔 UK cases of domestic violence go up 26% when England play, and 38% if the team loses.
So let me get this straight. A cabinet minister of federal government can carry on business as usual when under investigation for sexual assault.
But an NRL player (or employees in many other professions let’s be real) would be stood down?
I’m sick of reading articles like “the worlds most successful people get up at 4am”. Successful by what measure? Are these also the world’s most grumpy and tired people? Do they go to bed at 7pm and have no kids or social life? Stop putting lack of sleep on a pedestal.
Alright who’s going to make a High Court challenge for McGowan’s latest border nonsense? (No, not you Clive.) Must be getting close to unconstitutional now.
CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) ANNOUNCEMENT:

Being able to walk around where you like/sit in the sun/read in a public place/do absolutely nothing outside your home for no good reason - without fear of being arrested - is a seriously underrated aspect of leaving lockdown.

“I’m off to get AZ. If

opens the pubs to vaccinated people and I’m not ready, I’ll be devo!!!”
- all my 20-something friends this week. So I think the pub incentive thing works?
In happier news...I recently got engaged! 💕Before you ask: we’re both active people so the rules about wearing activewear + staying 1.5m apart, outdoors, sound GREAT. Printing 10 invites will save us $$ for our honeymoon to the spare bedroom! And who wants a white dress anyway!
Entirely sick of these backyard legal crusader wannabes popping up in social media vids, claiming they can sue police asking them to wear a mask. I only received a pass in torts but I'm QUITE SURE you cannot sue the police for doing their job and enforcing a public health order.
EVERYONE HOLD THE PHONE: a few people (all male, without a clear profile pic or info) have messaged to tell me the numbers in this poster are made up. Thank goodness for these mansplainers. In that case I guess we can all relax.
Becoming a lawyer is an expensive privilege. Although “diversity” has become the catchcry of law firms across
#auslaw
in recent years, little spotlight has been shone on the lack of socio-economic diversity pervading the profession.
My latest for LSJ.
When I met my childhood hero
@CathyFreeman
a few years back she asked me, “Are you an athlete too?”
This is still a - if not, the - high point in my life.
Since the pandemic began I’ve been cycling to the office when I need to go in and it is a GLORIOUS way to commute. Also faster than waiting for buses. 🧐 Why didn’t I do this before?
Ps for anyone following the stolen bike saga, I bought a new (2ndhand) bike. RIP my former Reid.
A year ago I took the leap and went fully freelance. It’s been hard yakka but also some of the most fun and fulfilling and rewarding times I’ve had professionally.
Today I sent my 100th invoice. 🎉📺🎙️✍🏻
A little news from me... After almost 7 years, 70+ editions and innumerable deadlines, I’m stepping away from LSJ to pursue new opportunities as a freelancer! I've loved reporting on legal issues, and the amazing people I work with, but it’s time to chase some new dreams.💫
Here’s a Christmas tweet to make you smile. Every year, the Australasian Lawyers Surfing Association take Jarjum Indigenous School surfing at Bondi. Many of the kids are from disadvantaged backgrounds and would rarely see a beach. It is joy to behold. ❤️ + this year we got hats!
Former DPP Nicholas Cowdery getting fair bit of air time on

these days. Last time discussing why he didn’t prosecute in the disappearance of Lyn Dawson. Tonight, why he did in when Tegan Lane disappeared. Two cases, no bodies, two very different results.

LIFE HACK: if you use a potato peeler to shave slices off a sweet potato, then lay them flat on a sandwich press, sprinkle with salt and toast for five minutes - you have oil-free, crispy, cheap-as-chips, SWEET POTATO CHIPS!
I think I’ve got the
#covidnsw
blame game downpat. Byron and Newcastle are mad at Sydney for spreading virus. Meanwhile Sydney is mad at southwest Sydney, who is mad at Bondi, who is mad at the airport driver, who is mad at international travellers, who are mad at…the world?
My Dad retired this week and first things first he did what all good retired boomers do. He lined up for Aldi special buys on Saturday 8.30am and came home with this fire pit, which he installed by end of day.
NSW, I propose: A NEW RACE! A race to make the first Monday after 70% double vaxxed EARLIER than 18 October!
How about 4 October? Crucially, it's a long weekend Monday, wouldn't that be a treat!
So when Gill announces the new Tassie

team of the same name created at the same time? I truly hope so. THAT will be momentous.

Pipe Masters in Hawaii. Monster conditions and the women were absolutely slaying 🤯🙌🏻
@tracksmag
In some happy news, I’m shortlisted for the
@NSWCCL
award for civil liberties journalism. 🥳 In a year that has seen civil liberties decimated by extraordinary govt power - plus important jobs in journalism smashed - it’s nice to see an award recognising this work.

For feminists, sports lovers and law nerds alike - this is a beautiful document. Second page of the gender discrimination lawsuit that the US women’s soccer team is filing against US Soccer. 🙌🏻 Go get em girls!

A thought.
@TraceySpicer
is one of the hardest-working, most authentic and well-intentioned humans I have ever met. She is busy. She has a family + her own mental health to take care of. She also is incredibly empathetic.
Vicarious trauma is real and damaging. Take care, Trace.
Both England and Australia will be on unfamiliar ground when they take to the SCG for the third and deciding test match tomorrow night, with Michael Hooper racking up yet another accolade in a long list of achievements |

Jesus Christ. Here’s an actual response to the Law Society’s Facebook page, when we pulled advertising off 2GB. I didn’t want to give it more air...but this is absolutely disgusting and anyone who doubts racism in Australia can stand corrected. You can’t make this stuff up.
Get you a man that looks at you the way I gaze at Her Excellency Margaret Beazley, 39th Governor of NSW. 😍🙈
Can’t wait to bring you this interview with this incredible woman. Video and print cominup.

Today I learnt that there is a basketball court on the fifth floor of the US Supreme Court building, which sits a floor above the actual courtroom.
It is aptly nicknamed “The Highest Court in the Land”.
For

nerds: a state of emergency gives rise to extraordinary legal powers. It gives the RFS authority to control govt resources, shut down essential utilities like water and electricity, to take possession of property, + more. It is now law to obey firefighters.
#BREAKING
Eftpos is DOWN in the Legal District. Hungry, de-caffeinated lawyers are patrolling Phillip Street like a scene from The Walking Dead. How long before they all begin to turn on each other?!?
You know when people go on stage to win awards and you’re like “Ahh they were told in advance they would win so they could write a speech; they seem calm and well dressed.”
Well imagine my HORROR when
@NSWCCL
did NOT, and tonight I received an award on the couch in my trackies!!
This is absolutely shattering and my heart goes out to the families. How many more headlines like this before NSW is going to consider new strategies against drugs, or even the simple step of pill testing!?
#auslaw
I’m nervous to share this and deeply aware of the responsibility such a story holds. But it’s an important story to tell. Thank you to those brave women who re-lived their own trauma to expose a critical issue in the legal profession.

The final edition of LSJ for 2018 has arrived.
It tackles an important issue: sexual harassment. Until now, lawyers have remained relatively tight-lipped in the era of
#MeToo
but data shows lawyers are not immune to or innocent from this scourge.

reports.

“A few of the eccentric people who can’t get on with lawyers tend to become barristers. The barristers that cant get on with each other become judges. Imagine us judges in an open plan office!” - Justice Gleeson foresees difficulties in the courts moving to open-plan.

This morning
@sunriseon7
had two women as guest experts discussing the footy results from this weekend, being legends

and

and I think it’s the best morning sports recap I’ve seen yet 👏🏻 Fully about this. More women in sport chats!
@LadiesWhoLeague
An interview that stuck with me:
“A partner picked up one of those big plastic lever-arch files and threw it at me, yelling, ‘Get the f*ck out’. I put my hands up to stop the folder hitting my face and the plastic side of the file slashed my wrists. I still have a 30cm scar."
@GeoffsOpinions
This actually makes a huge difference and while I wish it wasn’t necessary, those sorts of actions can make the walk a lot more relaxing for us 🙏🏻
Imagine if a stockbroker or bank CEO was caught making insider trades. He or she would be sacked, stat. It's the same thing, cricket is a full time professional career that taxpayers help to fund.

If you have seen the film ‘Babe’ you will remember scenes of rolling green hills and farmyards with plenty of watered cattle. This was filmed near my hometown Bowral, in Robertson. Here are photos of Robertson and surrounds today.
My dad has been feeding local Kookas leftover mince meat each morning; so much so that have come to expect their gourmet breakfast daily and will fly down to greet anyone who opens the curtains. Sequel to Hitchcock’s The Birds coming, 2021.
An absolute legend of the sport already and has faced a lion’s share of challenges and critics. So well deserved and I am in awe of you

In happy news, today
@ripcurl
promoted an Australian woman to Global CEO. Brooke Farris will be the first woman to lead the surf company in its 52-year history. Fantastic news for the sport and (previously male-dominated) surf industry.

If not for covid, today would have been my wedding day and I’m a bit sad but also smug because it’s raining and we postponed. Now can covid and La Niña both bugger off by December please.
Didn't get a clerkship, didn't get a grad position, didn't even get an interview with a partner. Now oh how the tables have turned - I'M interviewing THEM and getting into the most senior legal offices every day!

My boyfriend’s dog was mauled by a Rottweiler while we were walking him down street (Archie was on leash - the Rottweiler off - it’s owners laughing). 😢 He had an operation and spent the night at the vet but doing okay now. Any animal law experts got advice here? It feels wrong.
Something I’ve been working on …
Introducing MAKING IT - a documentary film sharing the untold stories of women in different sports and their triumphs and failures on their journey to the top.
Headlining the Women’s Adventure Film Tour and coming to screens in September. 🎥📺
Shout out to
@della79
for crediting my story about the netball scoreboard snafu when using quotes from it, as well as asking permission. Already had a few versions ripping off without a mention. A rare courtesy, Erin you’re a good egg!
There are times in every journalist’s career when one must pull out all the stops to impress their interview subject. For the formidable and much-loved Governor Margaret Beazley AO QC, a red carpet won’t cut it.
Time to roll out the red pant suit.
One good thing to come out of this

sitch is that companies are finally waking up to the downsides of hot desking: a major one being spread of germs. Surely we will see the death of hot desking. 🙏
Ironic that a government largely educated by FREE ZERO DOLLAR university back in the day is now making uni oppressively expensive and taking away HECS for students who fail subjects.
