A mobile, community-led crisis response team in 6 BC communities shows that police don’t have to be involved in mental health emergency calls. Since Jan 2023 five teams have responded to nearly 10,000 calls. 99% were resolved without involving police:

Like many others, I am still processing the heartbreaking events of this weekend in Vancouver. While we don't yet know much about what happened or why, we do know there is huge suffering and loss in our communities—in the Filipino community, in Vancouver, among all of us.

While adults are being held for their own safety, rights to fair process – incl knowing why they are held or what to do about it – are often denied. Not every detention is unlawful, but many are; harms unequally fall on people with disabilities, seniors and unhoused people 2/2.

Yesterday, we released this report where I found that a significant number of vulnerable adults are being detained under the Adult Guardianship Act through an opaque process with very little oversight, often in a way that violates their rights. 1/2.
