Writer/Producer: The People V O.J. Simpson, Ed Wood, Dolemite Is My Name, Man on the Moon, The People vs Larry Flynt, Big Eyes, Auto Focus, 1408, Problem Child
Comedy legend Mel Brooks introduced a special screening of “Dolemite is My Name” this weekend - it may have been the highlight of our lives. Mel has been our hero since we were 10 - nobody we admire more. Writer/Director/Producer/Genius. Here’s an excerpt
One of my favorite Fred Willard moments was when he was asked on a talk show what he was up to - he replied “I’m working on a novel”. The host congratulated him and Fred replied: “Those things are so hard to read”
Ed Asner was such a good guy - I didn’t know him at all but when “Dolemite” was released he contacted me out of the blue to say how much he enjoyed it. What a mensch. R.I.P.
R.I.P. Buck Henry - our most fearless screenwriter. Buck was also a big personality & a performer... he gave screenwriting a face. Growing up I could turn on Saturday Night LIve (which Buck hosted 10 times) and point to the funniest, smartest guy and say - that's a screenwriter.
Found a sweet pic of Norm MacDonald when he was a young kid. Just hanging on the couch. But I guarantee you… he was still the funniest person in that room.
I notice the truck ahead of me has this plate. I pull up next to him & say “I love your plate. Why did you get it?” He smiles: “My Name is Ed and I do hardwood floors!” Oh. “I wrote a movie called Ed Wood.” Blank stare. Never heard of it. Red light turns green. I drive away.
No one remembers how hated Stanley Kubrick’s film of “The Shining” was during its first run in theaters. Here is Variety giving the finger to it and “Barry Lyndon” at the same time:
'Killers Of The Flower Moon' Cannes Review: The latest work from Martin Scorsese is "Great American Film too, in the old-fashioned sense of that term" says Fionnuala Halligan.

Another excuse to congratulate Mel Brooks - Happy 97th Birthday! Mel has accomplished so much over those years but what really impresses me is that he can still fit into his World War II Army jacket! I can’t fit into the pants I bought in February! Viva Corporal Kaminsky!
Nobody loves the movies more than Mel Brooks. So happy to announce he’s receiving the Honorary Oscar at this years Governors Awards! Writer/Director/Producer/Actor/Genius and all around great guy - Mel Brooks is the King! ❤️
Happy Birthday Gena Rowlands - she’s 91 today. This pic is her arriving with John for the Oscars in 1975 - they were both nominated for “A Woman Under The Influence”
I had the good fortune to host John Saxon at the American Cinematheque - screening his Bruce Lee epic “Enter the Dragon” and the Marlon Brando western “The Appaloosa,” for which Saxon earned a Golden Globe nomination. He was a great guy full of stories.
So excited this is finally being announced - a gorgeous new restoration of Milos Forman’s original theatrical cut of “Amadeus” - the version that won eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Actor. See it on the Academy Museum’s beautiful big screen
I’m watching The Magnificent Ambersons & there’s a scene where Joseph Cotton reads a newspaper. BUT... the column one story is written by Jed Leland - Joseph Cotton’s character in Citizen Kane!! There’s even a photo of Jed! Cotton in one film is reading Cotton from another film!!
You all thought my crazy hair was just a Covid beard but it was actually a writing/researching the Grateful Dead movie beard! A total dream come true project for us to collaborate with Scorsese (!!!) and Jonah to celebrate this incredible story of the band’s long strange trip.
Milos Forman was our friend and our teacher. He was a master filmmaker - no one better at capturing small unrepeatable moments of human behavior. We made two movies together and every day spent with him was a unique adventure. Milos loved life. I will miss his laughter.
R.I.P. Seymour Cassel - most will remember him as an amazing actor and John Cassavetes right hand man. But my memory will be him catching my wife’s garter at our wedding.
John Singleton lived every minute of his 51 years. I’m going to miss laughing, talking movies, watching movies, making movies with this amazing human being. Love you buddy. Condolences to Justice and his whole family.
Jack Lemmon was born 98 years ago - he was the first celebrity I ever met. I was an 18 year old film critic invited to the press junket for his Oscar nominated role in the now forgotten movie “Tribute.” No one knew I was that young so I drank my first glass of scotch with Jack.
A truly magical moment - a “Dolemite is My Name” FYC event turns into an impromptu jam session with Keegan Michael Key, Craig Robinson, and Wesley Snipes - A beautiful version of “Tennessee Whiskey”

I’m obsessed with the 1969 film “Last Summer” and the disappearance of Oscar nominated actress Catherine Burns from the Hollywood scene. This week the Hollywood Reporter solved the mystery and unfortunately it’s heartbreaking:
Paramount announces their 1974 slate in the NYT. One jewel after another: Chinatown, Godfather 2, The Conversation, Don’t Look Now, The Parallax View, The Longest Yard… I’ve kept this newspaper supplement for 50 years.
Our daughter Carver produced the new miniseries “Scenes From a Marriage” premiering tonight on HBO. Based on Ingmar Bergman’s award winning classic… I guess making her watch movies with subtitles when she was a kid has paid off. We couldn’t be more proud of her.
“Nobody knows anything” is a liberating concept. It means don’t take no for an answer, be bold, try something new. Yes, the fall will probably kill ya... but listen to your inner voice. R.I.P. the great screenwriter William Goldman.
Sad news - one of the true gentlemen in this business Rance Howard has passed away. Ron and Clint Howard’s Dad - Scott and I got to know him as Old Man McCoy in “Ed Wood” and from eating lunch daily at the Tallyrand Restaurant in Burbank. A real sweetheart. R.I.P.
Roger Ebert died 8 years ago today. The only time I met him was at this event in South Bend. I was 14 & bum rushed him as he was leaving. We talked Bergman’s Hour of the Wolf, Shame & The Passion of Anna. I had a bunch of facts wrong but he didn’t treat me like a kid or an idiot
Peter Bogdanovich wrote a book recommending a film a week for an entire year. Here is what he says you should watch January 8-14: “The Lady Eve”. I second that emotion.
The world just got a lot quieter… and a lot less funny. Gilbert Gottfried was kindred soul. We made two movies with him, a cartoon tv series & did his podcast whenever possible. Sending love to his wife Dara, his kids, and his good pal Frank Santopadre. “Too soon” indeed.
Andy Marx - one of the rare third generation WGA members! His legendary grandfather Groucho was a member. His father Arthur wrote Bob Hope movies. And now Andy is out marching the line!
Drive-in movie theaters are seeing a surge in business amid the coronavirus pandemic. Patrons say it’s a rare way to get out of the house for some safe fun. I visited a drive-in yesterday to talk to moviegoers — here’s the story (photos by

R.I.P. Peter Fonda. Most will post about “Easy Rider” - a great film - but I’d also strongly recommend his 2nd movie as a director - the little known lyrical western “The Hired Hand” - We did an evening together celebrating it at the Cinematheque - Peter was so proud of that film
Magical night with Al Pacino discussing “Dog Day Afternoon” and how he almost turned it down. In awe of the man and the film. Thanks to the Actors Studio and everyone else who made this special evening happen. (1/4)
For Gods sake - let kids sleep. “Online school could be a chance to change outdated educational practices—but schools are punting on the easiest fix of all”. via

Peter Bogdanovich loved the movies. Making them, watching them, analyzing them, talking all night long about them. “Paper Moon” and “What’s Up Doc?” are two of the most entertaining films of all time. Put on an ascot and watch them tonight. R.I.P.
