citation about dreams from the philosopher Zhuangzi: Am I am man dreaming that I am a butterfly? Or a butterfly dreaming that I am a man? A binding element is the idea of being on the train, however it is not a lucid experience, but rather possessing a quality of a dream

which morph into (Jacques) Derrida. The next ‘stop’ subsequently reveals a dance of tango, then a vocalisation on da-ri-da (a play on Dada and Derrida), followed by the choir telling their dreams over a refrain, before the return of the opening idea, and final paraphrased

Much like an absurd dream, Train Ride weaves its way through a game of musical (and some extra-musical) associations. Each ‘stop’ reveals something new – the phrase ‘Train Ride’ turns into consonants ‘t’ and ‘r’, which then morph into ‘d’ and ‘r’,

The line between a dream and a day-dream is blurred as this composition reflects on the experience of living in a big city and spending much of one’s life on the train, as well as the experience of nonsensical dreams where one disparate episode leads to the next.

The idea was to link my new music with great composers that inspired me - going seamlessly from one work to the next (starting on the same note as the last note of the piece before )

Franz Schubert b otd 1797! What a genius - music sang through him as through none other. His melodies, his charm, his profundity, his early joy, replaced by a morbid sense of death in painful contrast to his love of life; he shows us heaven - and hell - in music of sheer beauty.

Hard to describe what it felt like premiering @Karakelcomposer’s ‘A Christmas Offering’ at @snapemaltings last night. It is such a privilege to be part of bringing a new piece into the world! This is a little excerpt of the 3rd movement. Honestly obsessed with this piece…
