I have nothing bad to say about Legal Eagle, and still think there is value in their video on the topic. But I just wanted to be clear that it isn’t as easy as “just don’t use stuff in the SRD and you’re all good”. There are a lot more nuances and complications to be aware of.

It mirrors verbiage & rules that existed prior to it. The more your original work links itself to the existing concepts of D&D the easier it is for fans of the game to understand and follow. In this way, it actually becomes difficult to write without using SRD specific language.

2nd. Legal Eagle, not being an avid D&D player, probably has no idea what writing a subclass entails, generally this specific task is required to be linked to elements of the SRD. Quoting rules is one thing, but for example, every cleric gets an expanded spell list.

Creating all new spells is possible, but unlikely for every writer, usually we rely on many of the built in basic elements of the game, like giving your cleric bless, to fit our creations in to the existing format like a puzzle piece. My warlock may reference Eldritch blast, etc.

Without it being tied to the OGL and SRD, is something that then would remove a lot of its marketability and readability. It’s usefulness at game tables would drop, and it would be harder to understand how exactly to implement it. So, can we just use the rules of the game? Yeah.

We made a short about the “casting a spell as a bonus action” rule in D&D 5e. A pretty standard rule from the rule book that we simply explained. Not a single comment has been positive… I’m baffled. People are either mad the rule exists, or are mad at us for explaining it.

D&D is NOT the easiest TTRPG to learn. However, D&D 5e is the easiest D&D has ever been for players and DMs. With lots of resources to make learning and playing even easier. I was hesitant to become a DM until 5e because of how simplified it was over other versions. (1/3)

IMO, cutting this flashback scene out of The Two Towers was the biggest disservice to the theatrical versions. This scene informs the audience heavily why Boromir & Faramir do EVERYTHING they do through the films. Also shows us Denethor’s opinion of his children. It’s invaluable.

Aside from my desire that some of the characters had more plot, and that the group dynamic was a bit tighter, I think this is a great popcorn flick to switch your brain off with, and easily the best D&D film we’ve ever seen.
