Similar gender conforming behaviours and lavish spending can be seen at weddings too - both signal 'romance' which is wrapped in ideas of tradition (see work of @juliajcarter here).

Why are these popular? I can think of many more reasons, including that the elite like to make spaces where they can hang out with their own and 'marry in'. That's a key motivation for private schools too
