It is exciting to see the junk fee discussion expanding! I know my coauthors and I hope this research continues to grow and that our paper on Airbnb cleaning fees offers a new angle to the literature on unshrouding fees with peer-to-peer sellers

I have a piece in the November issue of the Journal of Economic Perspectives making the economic case for regulating junk fees. Link to complementary article below.

Greater price transparency is clearly good for consumers. However, we, @KDBTran @leonmadio @millo_rossi, show for @Airbnb cleaning fees that this is more complicated with peer suppliers whose information about competitor pricing changes with transparency: https://t.co/PxFr9htQPL

1. People deserve to know upfront what price they’re being asked to pay, without worrying they’ll later be hit with mystery fees they can’t avoid. Today @FTC finalized a rule to ban these junk fees for short-term lodging and live-event ticketing. https://t.co/zwLEe3BUxL

Is there are good argument against these rules? Transparency is good, no? But guessing the new team will try to undo this. @nealemahoney @CassSunstein

The FTC issued rules requiring companies to display the full price of a hotel room, concert ticket or sporting event up front to customers, rather than hiding any extra charges — often called “junk fees” — until the very end of the checkout process.

Policy implications: Price transparency isn’t universally good or bad. While it reduces search costs and obfuscation, it can also lead to price increases in some cases. Regulation needs to consider both demand-side and supply-side effects carefully.

Core insight: transparency changes how hosts (not just guests) look at prices. When rivals’ total prices are clearer, hosts adjust. This is especially impactful on peer-to-peer platforms with pricing frictions and where some hosts and guests might be naive or have search costs.

Key results: • Listings with high cleaning fees reduced them by 2-4% post-policy. • But listings without cleaning fees raised their nightly prices by 5-6%. Why? Greater transparency let some hosts realize their prices were more competitive, prompting increases.

Airbnb hosts set nightly prices and cleaning fees. Before 2019, EU guests only saw cleaning fees at checkout. After a regulatory push, Airbnb made these fees visible upfront. Using a difference-in-differences approach, we studied the impact on prices and fees.

How does price transparency affect markets? 🤔 In our new paper, we analyze Airbnb’s policy change in the EU, where cleaning fees became fully transparent. The surprising finding: transparency doesn’t always lead to lower prices. Here’s why 👇
