There’s a lot of the story that I don’t know, but what’s clear is that for George Roebuck, & for his family-the idea of America was worth risking everything for. Man, it would be amazing to sit and talk with him - to tell him that his sacrifice paid big dividends

After his capture and death, his sons continued in the fight for independence. Benjamin led a company of men at Cowpens, a decisive battle that ultimately led to victory at Yorktown.

Soon after, George was captured by the British and held on a prison ship in Charleston Harbor. There, he died of smallpox—one of many patriots lost to disease in captivity.

A short time later, George and two of his sons, Benjamin and John (my grandfather), helped repel Tarleton at the Battle of Blackstock’s Farm, just a few miles from where the family home had been destroyed.

In 1781, British forces under Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton targeted George’s home. They burned it to the ground and everything was lost, including the family Bible.
