The 21st century must be the time when enterprise and humanity align. There are many ways to be data-driven, inclusive, accountable, and relational. To be relational is to be specific, and to be specific, you must be willing. The 9-to-5 is important. But so is the 5-to-9.

If your inclusion strategy understands how to deal with what employees experience when they are in the office, but ignores what happens when they go home (particularly for those who live in black and brown communities), it needs to change.

Know that true safe spaces are accountable spaces, and to be accountable, you must be educated about what is going on in the communities within a segregated city like Chicago. If your CSR is not set up to engage the root issues, and the data that keeps dividing the city, it must.

Do you have any way to start the conversation about what happened in Chicago when #HarithAugustus was shot 7 times in the back by police last week, and then the hundreds of protesters and journalists who assembled to protest were beaten and pushed back by police?

Consider this: you have 30 employees, five of whom are black. You are based in Chicago. Your CSR is focused on education. You inclusion is focused on talent pipelines. You completed your employee survey on internal culture, and it came back mostly positive.

When you consider what inclusion means in a company, also consider what it means in a city. This means data matters within and inside your institution, and how you understand the connectivity of during, and after work, matters GREATLY. Employees go home to different realities.

A 2017 Justice Department review found Chicago police used force nearly 10x more in incidents involving black suspects than against white suspects. African-Americans were the subject of 80% of all police firearm uses and 81% of all Taser contact-stun uses 2011-2016 -@USATODAY
