Rereading Roth's The Human Stain for some research and like most other Zuckerman novels I forgot it was a Zuckerman novel. May we all find such useful and reusable frames.

Good morning! I wrote a Close Read feature on a poem I've always loved, Auden's "Musee des Beaux Arts." This was an experience to write and I hope it will be an experience for you to read

To be fair, she’d be a great character.

Having to write character descriptions, have been told to consider a This Meets This model, and am so tempted to use (to those who will read this) obscure references only. “The mother from Fierce Attachments meets Bluets-era Maggie Nelson.”.

After almost 15 years of not having a dedicated workspace, today I pulled this wagon to an office I rented for myself alone. No windows, weird carpet, but mine, and I find myself like Emma Bovary, walking through life elated as I think, “I have an office! I have an office!”

when anyone on this site mentions hating a book and says like, DM me, I will always assume they mean the one I wrote, which may sound like a lack of self esteem but is actually extremely egotistical.

Bought some Easter candy for the family & enjoyed thinking about a favorite NYC memory: the time when I watched a crying woman in a skirt suit emerge from a Duane Reade and eat a 6 pack of Peeps with vitriolic intensity.

This is why Heather's book is a book, and not a pamphlet, because she's charting something complicated and irreducible. But I hope all this attention means she sells lots of copies, because when I read her book I felt like a wide pasture opened up in my brain-the best feeling.

A sign of maturity is being able to feel hatred and say, 'oh, I'm feeling hatred' and not believe that is one's fixed state or the truth. Similarly to see someone else and say 'oh, they're feeling anger' and not assume that their opinion is forever.

It's conditional and ever-changing. Our emotions are not to be believed! And the tricky thing about marriage, which @hhavrilesky is sharing (bravely!), is that unlike any other relationship, you're usually sharing your day to day life with this person. They're implicated.

Sometimes our relationship feels bathed in golden light, sometimes we have two glasses of Gruner Vetliner and fall asleep in front of a mid-tier TV series and when we wake up we decide that our partner is responsible for all the wrong in the world.

I suppose I'm weighing in on 'the discourse' but thing that consistently shocks me about people in general is their inability to understand the transience of emotions, both their own and those of others.

I wrote a funny, romantic book that underscores the challenges of marriage and paints my husband as the hero of the story, and from the NY Times review to the tabloid coverage to The View, it's been warped to "Wife Is Total Bitch.".

This interview for @friezeofficial was a very good one. We talked about how Vlad the character is a 2021 kind of man, and how it would be devastating to see a Boomer fall on the street. Thank you @ianbourland for a stellar conversation.

Not to mention that while there are affairs in Transit of Venus, its subject matter is most certainly, well, clothed.

Whenever someone asks about the cover for Vladimir (so racy!) I tell the very true story that when they sent me the cover I was reading this, and my eyes had not even registered what was on it. Yes, she’s behind a curtain, but just take a second and consider a switch.

Very happy that the illustration makes me look like Bruce Bogtrotter—forced by the Trunchbull to eat an entire chocolate cake.
