A better description of Trump is economic nationalist. Trump’s economic nationalism is uniquely anti-left (furtively pro FDR), anti-uniparty, and Art of the Deal; opposed to China style communism & opposed to a one world government, favoring American sovereignty and stability.

Corporatism long ago subsumed capitalism. So now, any tug-of-war away from corporatism is also one away from capitalism. So now the big question is, will populism steer towards communism or will we steer towards nationalism and economic freedom?

To me it’s clear, that though America has been fascist-lite since The New Deal, Trump is far from fascistic compared to his political opponents. The relation of fascism to antifa (anti-fascism) is that of flammable to inflammable.

When looking at some of the key attributes of fascism, what do you notice? What politicians are more closely aligned with these ideas?

Even still, Fascism is fundamentally a left-wing ideology because it shares the Left’s goals of big, activist government, redistribution, and collectivism.

So while people like Dinesh D’Souza are correct to say that fascism is (or was) a phenomenon of the left (nationalism + socialism), they may be mistaken not to concede (in part) how the language has veered.

The left and the right used to be coherent distinctions within nationalism—but that has been blurred for what it’s worth.

This is why it makes sense when we see figures on the modern right like Curtis Yarvin advocate for “Monarchy” or even for Donald Trump to celebrate and nod to classical leftwing figures like FDR.

As a communist country, China is clearly “left wing”, however it is also proudly nationalist—which is considered a right wing orientation these days.

Some may disagree with that, which creates some difficulty with parsing language on one hand, and an opportunity for clarity on the other.

Many on the modern American left (even the modern global left) are deliberately/inadvertently anti-nationalist, while the modern right is predominantly pro nationalist.

These days the left and right primarily reflect entrenchments and team loyalties more than consistent ideology or vision (such as federalist or anti-federalist).

If left and right held their original distinction regarding favored role of government, we would see Monarchy, Totalitarianism, Communism, Fascism, Corporatism, Oligarchy etc. as variant manifestations on the left.
