Every pixel matters! Here's an ancient tree I did for a key moment in Bionic Bay. It's only used once in the game but the payoff is real! (I hope...🤞)

There are 5 types of snowfall here:
Background:
1. Basic snowfall with particle size of one pixel
Game layer:
2. Particles collide with the environment
Foreground:
3. Blurry + more speed & noise
4. Very blurry + large particles
5. Large wind layer very close to camera

Call me old-fashioned, but in my opinion, if you're creating a physics-based Sci-Fi game, every snowflake should collide with the environment. 😏

I'm building Bionic Bay literally one pixel at a time!
( Disclaimer: Custom brushes, paint bucket tool, blend modes, copy/paste, transform... Unity... some Blender may have been used...😏)

Still making some experiments with Black & White. I know I should use colors, I know it would be less risky, I know there's more mass appeal in colors...
But still... This looks kinda cool right?

My original idea was to not have any music in Bionic Bay, just environmental sounds. However, I've since changed my mind a bit. Subtle use of ambience in a spot like this can really elevate the experience.
While prototyping this camera tilt effect with a slight bullet-time-like slowdown, I realized I can now use these ropes to access a secret pathway.

Currently finalizing this ancient robot factory environment. Aiming for analog futurism and 80s blueish smoke effects. Not sure if either of those are a thing but maybe you know what I mean...

Some adjustments: Slight changes on how the snow particles behave: Less bouncy, more gravity towards the ground. I know that it may not be entirely realistic, but I also consider the aesthetic appeal in all of this.

Just got into my first ever Twitter dispute. A fellow artist claimed I was using AI. While doing that he had no arguments, was hostile + constantly offended me. I explained my process with wip images etc but he just became more hostile. Anyway, here's my process

Trying to maximize the beauty of simulated snowflakes with crystal-clear icy reflections. Bit by bit, this is starting to feel like a real world. ❄️

More prototyping with spherical gravity.
Here, the atmosphere of the miniplanet serves as a visual indicator for modified gravity.
You can also use the Swap mechanic to move the planets around, adding a lot of possibilities in level design.

I watched a streamer play Bionic Bay a while ago, and he mentioned that in a game like this, graphics don't really matter...
Which one do you prefer?
😩 No graphics
🤩 Yes graphics
I think every Sci-Fi game needs a main protagonist who can automatically dodge huge rocks with his hands while hanging on a ledge.

To really highlight the scale of the world I try to use excessive camera zooms every now and then. Notable inspirations for dynamic camera work are games such as GRIS or Shadow of the Colossus.

Exploring ancient megastructures in Bionic Bay.
One of the biggest inspirations for this has been the first Tomb Raider on Playstation 1. It was the first time playing a game and actually having a feeling that this is a real place.

Bionic Bay is full of ancient & advanced technology & structures but I try to combine that with natural elements as much as possible: Weird creatures, mutated plants & decayed roots etc
