Read this biography on the strength of the author's earlier work on the Habsburg army. Bassett is clearly a Habsburg fan. Nothing wrong with that. But here he has produced a hagiography, diminishing what could have been an interesting work about a great ruler.

Some light fiction for a change. An easy read. But in the end I found myself wondering "What is the point?"

Just finished this book. Quite interesting, with excellent analysis of Church history between 1700 and 1903. The parts dealing with diplomatic and colonial history are more uneven.

Picked this up while browsing in my local book store. Sounded interesting, but unfortunately most of it is about the author and his fascination with conspiracy theories. Disappointing.

I pray that Catholic education will help each person to discover their own call to holiness. Saint Augustine, whom Saint John Henry Newman greatly admired, once said that we are fellow students who have one Teacher, whose school is on earth and whose chair is in heaven (cf.

Just finished this book by @JosephTorigian. Not "light reading" but totally worth it. An interesting account of a man, a family and the all-consuming ideology and power-struggles of the CCP. Detailed, erudite and enlightening.

Just finished this book. There is an interesting story here, but the author sticks to story-telling and lacks the historical background knowledge and know-how to make it into something more. So we are left with a morality tale instead of a real work of history.

The important question to ask about yesterday’s failure by the EU to agree the sequestration of Russian assets for a loan to Ukraine is why did the EU member states not accept Bart De Wever’s demand for full risk-sharing? This was a totally reasonable request since Belgium, as

Recently read this book. Looked interesting when I picked it up while browsing in my local bookstore. But while the author does provide some interesting insights he tries too hard to mix serious history with would-be stand-up comedy. This seriously detracts from his story.

Recently read this while on vacation. An excellent - and critical - biography of a not so well-known historical figure but also a very interesting perspective on a crucial period in the history of Poland. Recommended reading.

Recently read this on vacation. Like most books by this author very well-written and historically well-informed. Found the ending somewhat unsatisfying and rushed. But excellent evocation of a bygone era.

Recently read this as vacation literature. Entertaining and well-written, but not quite as convincing as "The Silent Patient".

Recently read this while on a trip. Like other books by the same author this one is very critical of China(s leadership. Hard-hitting and sometimes repetitive and too negative. But a useful correction to the many hymns extolling the Chinese "miracle".

Recently read this book (while in Japan). An interesting perspective. Not so much a traditional narrative history as a "mental" history of Japan and its people. A worthwhile read.
