Tory shadow home secretary Chris Philp was the guest speaker at the press gallery lunch today. He said he "was considering airbrushing out the entire Liz Truss episode" from his CV before last year's election. He joked his kids "keep saying dad, you're an embarrassment".

Also, when asked if a new left-wing party led by Jeremy Corbyn would be an electoral threat to Labour, Kinnock says "I understand they’re having difficulty coming up with a name". He suggests a name: "The Farage assistance group.".

Former Labour leader Neil Kinnock tells Sky News his party should take "a step in the direction of equity and fairness". He says the government should consider tax rises on wealth and assets. The theme of fairness - in an echo Starmer's video below - comes up again.

I noticed he said fairness was at the heart of his government’s purpose in his interview with the BBC’s Political Thinking. Is this the beginnings of an attempt to tell a more compelling political story about his premiership?. A frequent criticism is he doesn’t have one.

Back in May, Duncan-Jordan was the organiser of a rebel letter that said the welfare reforms were "impossible to support" without a "change of direction". That letter was signed by 42 MPs - a sizable chunk of the rebel contingent prior to these concessions.

These proposals will still force disabled people into poverty. I oppose a two-tier approach where the support you get depends on when you applied - not on need. There’s a fairer, more Labour way. Let's ask wealthy corporations and individuals to pay - not the disabled.

11 months ago I became Chairman of Reform. I’ve worked full time as a volunteer to take the party from 14 to 30%, quadrupled its membership and delivered historic electoral results. I no longer believe working to get a Reform government elected is a good use of my time, and.

For context, Burgon has been vocal critic of the proposed benefits cuts, so his comments aren't surprising. But there are misgivings among Labour MPs who aren't the usual suspects. E.g. some from the 2024 intake have concerns and may be minded to vote against the plans.

He said the PM should U-turn. “I don’t think people admire an old type of leadership where one becomes stubborn and even when it becomes clear it’s the wrong thing to do, you’ll plough on anyway. If we’re not careful, we’ll end up paving the way for a Reform government.".

I asked him whether he had told the PM he was speaking in his constituency, as is convention. "I sent him a very nice email on Friday, informing him I’d be coming," said Burgon, who had the Labour whip withdrawn for rebelling over the two-child benefit cap earlier this year.

He said the welfare reforms were "un-Labour". "It's unconscionable to try and balance the books on the backs of the poor and the disabled," Burgon said. He said he was prepared to vote against the benefits changes when they are put before MPs in Parliament.
