Alcaraz Medvedev: We all knew this was a bad matchup. We saw just how bad at Indian Wells. The question was, would it be different this time? Would the indoor conditions, grass surface, and the run of form and confidence that Daniil has been on make a difference? It did not.

I was harassed in the stands during this match, had people repeatedly put their hands on me who self IDed as your fans. I hope there can be more than just condemnation, but actual reflection upon why ppl who come to see you feel it’s ok to act this way towards Daniil and his fans

I chose to remove Halep’s name from my twitter bio today. She’ll always be an important part of my tennis-fan identity, but she won’t be a part of how I present myself going forward. I may write about the experience of having your favorite player caught cheating. A lot to unpack

Seeing tennis players lose their nerve is important to me. I’ve had a lot of emotional outbursts in my life, on the court and off it. I’ve felt ashamed. I’ve felt defiant. But I can never experience those emotions from the outside.

THIS IS NOT WHAT DANIIL WAS DOING! This gesture was made in the direction of fans sitting by O’Connell’s box. It was not directed at his box and the cut to Gilles and Dasha looking sheepish and leaving is extremely misleading.

Oh and the retirement… That’s a bummer… Not that it definitely made a difference, but they should never be playing this late and in these kind of conditions. 2-week masters and they’re playing past midnight. Not a roof in sight. Not a great way to treat your talent

So, one thing about NK that I guess I’d always accepted at face-value was the idea that his appeal was something like a youth movement. Patrick McEnroe loves to talk about how they teach kids the tweener at their academy and he attributes that to kid’s excitement about NK (cont.)

What a day😅Just wanted to have a last word before it’s history: All the emphasis on the “Daniil x Clay” narrative is overshadowing what I think is the even more amazing thing he’s done. I have never seen a man outside the big 4 maintain a run quite like this one.

Alcaraz Djokovic: No one w/ any sense doubted Alcaraz’s talent and ability to compete w/ Novak. But how he would handle the pressure of the biggest match of his life after the extreme disappointment of his loss at RG was a big question. Turns out he handled it like a champion.

Deserved win from Rublev. Overcame the disappointment of set 1. Have to be so impressed with his patience and rally tolerance. Won three 30+ shot rallies in the breaker, all at pivotal moments. A far cry from the AO in 21 where Daniil broke Rublev mentally with a 45 ball rally

So, lots to say about this match, but I’ll start with this: We like to talk about players winning by “just being better on the big points,” but with Alcaraz, it’s hard to argue that’s actually what’s going on.

For Iga, improving in this matchup starts with the return. She needs to step back and play with more shape. It’s too hit and miss where she’s currently returning from and too often she’s taking away her own time to defend against the +1 w/ her position and pace

Medvedev-Grass Thoughts: Wondering about Daniil’s 2-2 record on Grass? It boils down to: 1. Less successful at neutralizing points 2. 2nd serve is attackable 3. Less offensive forehand opportunities 4. Difficulty defending against lower balls 5. Poorer returning

So if you’re wondering what just happened to Alcaraz, I only caught the 2nd set, but here’s what I saw: Fabian Marozsan, in his first ever ATP main draw, played an uncompromising version of high-risk, first-strike tennis and Alcaraz returned poorly, never managing to disrupt it

I agree w/ Rune. The changeovers at Roland Garros are stupidly short… 75 seconds, compared to 90 on the ATP tour. AND they start the clock immediately after the error to end the game. Just why? Why is it not ok to have a 90 second, or, god forbid, 2 minute break between games?

Had to see what the deal with Andreeva was; this is what I found: She’s pretty tall for 15, she loves the T serve and hits it accurately She moves really well, plays with a healthy amount of topspin, especially on her forehand, and hits w/ depth and accuracy moreso than pace

I understand why people react to this with, “Haha, so funny! Isn’t he quirky?” But it’s really so much more meaningful than that. Daniil has shown the ability to use humor to defuse frustration that would otherwise derail him. This is what managing emotions mid-match looks like

Reflecting on that match and on Daniil’s season, this was the outburst that felt most disproportionate and, honestly, kind of deranged. If you look at the context: the event, the match, the opponent, etc. it felt uncalled for; more like a culmination of everything from this year

In all seriousness, Rublev was amazing. He basically held nothing back in terms of power w/ out making UEs; constructed points beautifully, changing direction w/ a near even split to keep Carlos pinned back; punished Alcaraz’s deep return position w/ wide serves and pinpoint +1s
Another day, another Spaniard beaten in Madrid by a power player peaking on serve

Djokovic Medvedev Wrap Up (Pt 1): Daniil lost because he didn’t return well. Full stop. Credit Djokovic with a strong serving performance. His percentage, 54% for the match, was torpedoed by the 3 games he played on serve at the end of the 2nd set where his legs abandoned him.
