"Did NATO expansion cause Russia to invade Ukraine?" @DylanBurns1776 answered this question pretty convincingly:

Dylan goes on to point out that if the invasion was to stop NATO expansion, it backfired completely:

@JonathanTCasey @DylanBurns1776 Could you IMAGINE if Russia borders a NATO country? They'd have no choice but to invade, how could Russia tolerate being so close to their enemies? How would the US respond if Russia was on OUR border?!? Image unrelated.

@JonathanTCasey @DylanBurns1776 I'd also add that NATO expansion never really increased any material risk to Russia. This isn't the 1940s. Russia is a nuclear power. Having a big open frontier without a "buffer zone" is irrelevant. Nobody is interested in invading Russia and it would be suicidal to do it.

@JonathanTCasey @DylanBurns1776 The answer is yes, among other things, in case anyone is wondering.

@JonathanTCasey @DylanBurns1776 By starting the invasion they literally moved closer to NATO borders and encouraged more states to join NATO.

@JonathanTCasey @DylanBurns1776 So I guess we're just gonna ignore all of this? Is it some secret rule that press from before 2022 is verboten now? Because Pepperidge Farms remembers much...

@JonathanTCasey @DylanBurns1776 Pretty good. If you look up the history, we didn't promise Russia shit on NATO expansion. A diplomat proposed an offer but didn't get the approval later on and Russia has been hanging on that as their narrative claiming that US agreed to it.

@JonathanTCasey @DylanBurns1776 I don't like this answer because it ignores the deep involvement of NATO in helping Ukraine even before 2022
