There is an epidemic of isolation gripping the United States, health experts say, with the resulting loneliness disproportionately impacting men and leading to concrete health issues.

As of today I’ve been a faculty member for 25 years. This list from five years ago still applies.

I started as an assistant professor at @Carleton_U twenty years ago on July 1, 2000. We had email, but ‘teaching with technology’ mostly meant using an overhead projector. Here are a few thoughts on what I’ve learned as a faculty member over twenty years: 1/21.

On a final note, I was also very pleased to welcome our new president, Dr Tamara Small of the University of Guelph. The @cpsa_acsp is in excellent hands under Dr Small's leadership.

As with my predecessors' talks, the address will be published in the December issue of the Canadian Journal of Political Science. I'm happy to share the text with anyone now though; just ask.

At a time when democratic institutions are under pressure around the world, the study of Canadian political institutions remains more important than ever, but in new and expanded ways, beyond the traditional "legion of improvers.".

The field has been invigorated by approaches such as feminist institutionalism that unpack the institutions themselves. Particularly important are the cues that may seem obvious to people like me but are less visible to racialized and other equity-seeking groups.

While there was good work, we also had blind spots, particularly the extent to which most of us were white men studying the institutions of other white men. This led us into circular discussions with diminishing returns.

My address, "Canadian Institutionalism: Political Science and the Study of Political Institutions in Canada," focused on the "legion of improvers," including myself, that long took a normative view of Canadian political institutions, embedding ourselves at times within the state.

It was great to attend my 30th Canadian Political Science Association conference last week and deliver my presidential address. I was especially happy to be unconventionally introduced by @meagancloutier with a quiz for the crowd: "how well do you know Malloy and the CPSA?"

The CJEPS continued until 1967, when the Canadian Economics Association was formed with its own Canadian Journal of Economics. The Canadian Journal of Political Science began in 1968 and is still sometimes referred to as "the see-jeps", stemming from the old CJEPS acronym.

This month marks the 90th anniversary of the Canadian Journal of Economics and Political Science (CJEPS). The title reveals how the Canadian Political Science Association, despite its name, was a partnership between the disciplines of political science and economics.

Had an insightful conversation this week with @s_guilbeault and Political Science students from @Carleton_U. It was great to hear their questions and dive into what the lives of MPs and Ministers are really like, and discuss important issues facing Canada and the world.

When I was growing up, our church had a giant bathtub at the front. So did all the churches I knew well. This was the baptismal tank. It was hidden behind curtains most of the time. But every few months for a baptism, they were drawn back so the congregation could watch. 🧵.

A @TheHillTimes story by Ian Campbell quoting me: having now gone through a second painful struggle this century to remove its leader with no means to do so, I have a feeling the Liberal Party will learn absolutely nothing from the experience.

This Parliament has served as a kind of laboratory for the political utility of the Reform Act as the two largest parties both dropped their leaders. The Conservatives moved with the Reform Act’s lightning speed, while the Liberal ouster took months.

The prorogation of Parliament to accommodate our new national governing document, the Liberal Party constitution, demonstrates that party democracy and parliamentary democracy are not necessarily compatible.
