Their deaths paint a heartbreaking picture of a system that builds young men up and then discards them with no safety net. This points to a critical lack of support and Aftercare across the footballing system.

Beyond our study, countless young players have faced deeply difficult transitions out of the game. In the most tragic of outcomes, at least five young men – including Jeremy Wisten and Matthew Langton – have died by suicide after being released.

Aftercare from clubs was described as “non-existent.”. “Nah, no one (from the club) checked up on you”. Instead, participants felt forgotten about. Neglected. Left to pick up the pieces themselves without support. At the time they needed it the most.

Our research found that being released triggered an identity crisis. Players suddenly lost their purpose and direction – exiled with no support and no plan B. They felt exposed and vulnerable. Leaving them in a state of disorientation, lasting years.
