The counterexample to the oddly shaped reasoning of this essay is any one of the big cults. If you can constructively exploit people in surreptitious and self aggrandizing ways, then they want you.
Here's something I wrote about what YC looks for in founders: To the extent YC is good at picking founders, these are therefore also the qualities founders should cultivate.

This is not as big a deal as it seems: our cultures have terrible technologies of behavior. So much so, that it's easier to lower the smarts around you (often simply by buying them up) than to deal directly with the problems posed by the science of behavior. This is cult shit.
someday soon something smarter than the smartest person you know will be running on a device in your pocket, helping you with whatever you want. this is a very remarkable thing.

Don't worry, they're experts. $500k is now a number you can use to judge the comparative scale on which they actually care, somewhat remotely, about "safety". Compare $500k with OpenAI capital expenditures: how insignificant is the one to the other?.
Weβre launching a $500K Red Teaming Challenge to strengthen open source safety. Researchers, developers, and enthusiasts worldwide are invited to help uncover novel risksβjudged by experts from OpenAI and other leading labs.

It's not as if we can look upon other industries, e.g. the chemical industry @chemsafetyboard, and quickly see the consequences of similar nonsense. We've seen how long it has taken to speak of process safety, and how much there is left to do about it.
The gpt-oss models leverage our state-of-the-art approaches to safety training. We used deliberative alignment and an instruction hierarchy during post-training to help the models refuse unsafe prompts and defend against prompt injections, as well as pre-training interventions.
