Destructive cults are easy enough to spot if you are not part of them and you are familiar enough with the social control of behavior. Constructive cults, which emphasize positively reinforcing methods of control, are hard to spot: spotting the damage they do is even harder.

The counterexample to the oddly shaped reasoning of this essay is any one of the big cults. If you can constructively exploit people in surreptitious and self aggrandizing ways, then they want you.

This is not as big a deal as it seems: our cultures have terrible technologies of behavior. So much so, that it's easier to lower the smarts around you (often simply by buying them up) than to deal directly with the problems posed by the science of behavior. This is cult shit.
