Benfica's 40-year-old third choice goalkeeper Paulo Lopes has announced his retirement from football - with more trophies than appearances.
He played 11 games in 13 seasons - and won 12 trophies.

Everton have sold out their 1,400 allocation for Apollon Limassol away, but:
✅ Last European game for years
✅ Swerved the home games
✅ Booked the trip in September and couldn’t get a refund

Everton have sold out their 1,400 allocation for Apollon Limassol away, despite:
✅ Already out of competition
✅ 2000+ mile round trip
✅ Reserves likely to play
Everton fans 👏🏻👏🏻
Every season European finals are colonised by corporates. Fans who’ve travelled to previous rounds are often unjustly denied tickets.
Most fans don’t think about final allocations unless/until their club get there.
This has to stop.
European fans need a loud, unified protest.

We landed at 4:00 this morning in Bourgas 🇧🇬 and managed to get a lift to the Turkish border, where we were left to cross a foggy frontier. Across no man’s land the border guard took one look at us and said ‘Ah, Liverpool!’ It’s boss being a Red.

In memory of Shevchenko Park, that corner of Kiev. A pilgrim’s anthem, the greatest stage. To those who made it there, and those who made it happen.
A tribute to culture and creativity, those writers of songs and makers of flags. In celebration of a people, their club, our city.
The show of intellectual capacity, technical capital and tenacious Scouse solidarity from The Anfield Wrap spokesmen this week - especially Dan Austin and Neil Atkinson - has been absolutely phenomenal.
Taking the fight for justice to France and speaking truth to power. Heroes.
Liverpool fans at the Champions League final. The match might have been the stuff of nightmares - but the trip to Kiev (and the entire European campaign) was the stuff of dreams and songs to sing.

There’s a tendency from some fans to sneer at Palace for their ultra scene. I see them as an important voice in the game and the most consistently impressive fan movement in London. For the issues that unite us we can’t afford to be divided. Collective action works.

When I taught at Liverpool Hope Ken Dodd was given an honorary degree. Talking to lecturers after the ceremony, a lady interrupted him saying there was ‘some important people’ he should meet. He turned and said ‘Everyone’s important here love’ and carried on talking.

Reminder to the Wools at Anfield tonight:
When Leeds starting singing ‘Stand up if you hate Man U’ (hoping you’ll join in), the correct protocol is to sing ‘Liverpool’ and drown it out.
The enemy of your enemy is your friend, and tonight the enemy is Leeds.

One reason I don’t follow England is the little Englanders who do. I’ve seen them at every major tournament they’ve qualified for this century - they are a specific breed of xenophobic, angry bullies whose idea of a good time involves intimidating and inflicting misery on others.
A lady has just knocked on my door holding my wallet. She found it on the ground at the train station and located the address on my driving license. She drove 20 minutes out of her way to drop it off. People like her restore your faith in humanity.
England have a likeable manager and a fairly average team that succeeded by overachieving in a kind route to the semifinal before succumbing to a better team. To have been 30 minutes from the World Cup final was an achievement in itself. Now their dream is over. Theirs, not mine.
Absolutely no need for academic conferences to have a €400-500 registration fee. Institutional budgets are tightening and this isn’t helping. Streamline your events.

A few have asked about our route to Kiev, so I’m sharing this given the cost of flights/hotels:
Consider a UK-Poland-Lviv route. Lviv is in 🇺🇦 but far enough away to still be cheap - yet drivable. Zhytomyr is 85 miles from Kiev, with hotels from £20. Stay there and drive.

That square last night, the Concert Square of Barcelona. A man thrown in a fountain, a scene drowning in the banter of Bandwagon Wools. Situations like that need self-policing, but then no Scouser would go near a scene like that. Building towards a sequel of the Istanbul Effect.

It was an achievement just getting to Kiev, and not just for the team. There’s nowhere I’d rather be at the end of a European Cup campaign than stood in the ground with me mates, win or lose. Couldn’t be prouder to be a Liverpudlian. Safe journey home lads.
Grateful for the supportive replies to last night’s emotional thread on the brutal but pivotal criticism my film received. I’ll endeavour to process and apply lessons from both.
