Neat modelling + obs assimilation for East Auckland Current. Well done @rafac_santana “in situ subsurface temperature is of utmost importance to correctly simulate the top of the thermocline-one of the most difficult regions to simulate in ocean models” @helensmacdonald @niwa_nz
New paper showing assimilation of in situ mooring data using 4dvar to create a high-resolution reanalysis of the East Current Auckland. This reanalysis can help us better understanding x-shelf exchange processes @JoeMOCallaghan @uncwphysics @niwa_nz

Still time to apply for this PhD scholarship. New ocean observations - Nov 2022 - from Rangitāhua to disentangle biophysical processes. Another voyage in June 2023 for successful candidate to gain ocean-going research skills. @AliDrifting @Deni_ocean @KuriNgati @aucklandmuseum
Disentangling physical-biological oceanographic processes in the Rangitāhua/Kermadec region. PhD project working with me, @AliDrifting + @Deni_ocean starting early 2023. Supporting Ngāti Kuri-led research with Auckland Museum @KuriNgati @aucklandmuseum

Back from leading a 3-week RV Tangaroa voyage to Rangitāhua/Kermadecs Islands. It wasn’t always easy but I feel very privileged. Amazing location, great team, new knowledge of this pristine marine ecosystem. Ngāti Kuri-led research with Auckland Museum @KuriNgati @aucklandmuseum

Great to see this happening soon! Observing river plumes in Hawke Bay during winter with @tedconroy2. River plumes are only several metres thick below the surface but the salinity and sediment inputs have cumulative impacts on coastal oceans + ecosystems.

Cyclone vs robot. 120km/h wind gusts vs 1.5m glider. Tomorrow they go head-to-head!🤞ocean glider Manaia will observe rapid upper ocean mixing for @DeepSouth_NZ. How will ocean cooling from cyclones or storms impact Aotearoa’s weather in a changing climate? @niwa_nz @NiwaWeather

Glider deployment #30 underway. Manaia sampling from Bay of Islands to Bay of Plenty in 30 days for @MBIEsci smart idea. Ocean glider data + models = realistic ocean forecasting for Aotearoa’s oceans. @jas_mcinerney @niwa_nz @MetOceanNZ

Bluest ocean I've ever seen! Last Nov 2021 went to Rangitāhua/Kermadec Islands w Expedition Rangatahi. Such a privilege. Ocean glider+ big internal waves! Supports Ngāti Kuri-led research w Auckland Museum + Inkfish @aucklandmuseum @ngatikuri @niwa_nz, vid by Annika Andresen

Sitting by computer, watching NZ MIQ allocation refresh every 3.7s. Waiting, hoping to get a beep for an MIQ spot to get back to NZ from Australia. And even though I’ve lived in NZ for 15 years, Australia will make me apply for an exemption to go home to my whanau. It’s bonkers.

WRIBO measured salinity in Wellington Harbour lower than 10 psu- it’s usually around 32 psu - after all that rain on the weekend. That’s fresh! River plume will keep heading out to Cook Strait + beyond providing connectivity between our mountains + oceans @niwa_nz @greaterwgtn
After the heavy weekend rainfall what happens to the water quality in Wellington Harbour as the Hutt River flood plume flows in? Well, there's an OCW episode for that..... 😉

Congratulations to @Khush_Jhug on her successful PhD defence today. It’s been a great 4 years of glidering + sciencing!

I usually post about field work but last 12 months have been slow-going. Even today… was supposed to deploy a glider but Welly + COVID + uncertainty = cancelled trip. Sigh. Feels like treading water. Good stuff is happening too, I’ll be a JGR-Oceans editor from July 1 @AGU_OS

Unsuccessful 2021 Marsden. Same proposal to 2nd round in 2020 w excellent reviews. Ocean warming is >90% of global energy budget. Are warmer oceans mixing + changing deep ocean currents + global climate? Nowhere else in NZ science system to get this funded. Grr.

Great first PhD paper by @rafac_santana 👏👏👏 Analysis of year-long moorings deployed across New Zealand’s NE Shelf to observe the highly variable boundary current and its interaction with shelf seas @niwa_nz
A year in the life of the East Auckland Current!! Check this paper to see how ocean giant swirls and winds play an important role on the current variability!!

When I’m not chasing ocean gliders through Cook Strait I’m looking for a buoy that really shouldn’t go anywhere...

Hope not lost that vital equipment will be found.

Great story on mapping rivers in shelf seas with ocean gliders in Aotearoa New Zealand. https://t.co/eJeaBghd0Y Even made the front cover with @TeledyneMarine glider + Mt Taranaki by @fionaelliott001. @niwa_nz @Sust_SeasNZ
