Metro and Caltrans have erased hundreds of houses, apartments, and businesses - in the cities of Norwalk and Santa Fe Springs - to widen the 5 Freeway

But the biggest news is the first press club award for @joelinton! First place in non-political commentary for Metro/Caltrains Neighborhood Erasure Along the Lower 5 Freeway.

shout out to @contrerasforca @_amy1ee @volkerj2 @JoeLinton for being part of/helping research the video - and also for continuing to hold our 🤡 of a transit agency accountable

Ding dong, the Metro/Caltrans 23 year push to widen the lower 710 Freeway is dead! Kudos to CEHAJ (esp @EYCEJ @LASmogGuy) for decades of resistance!

Big news: Metro just canceled 710 Freeway widening project. The board just undid its 2018 approval of a $6+B widening that would have torn down neighborhoods to add two more lanes.

Maybe declare a climate emergency, and freeze the Metro highway widening budget at the current level.

In 2022, there are these climate and housing emergencies, so perhaps Metro board could - similar to 2020 - just freeze the highway expansion budget? Tell Metro Highway Program to work within the existing budget total approved last year, instead of continuing to increase funding

Back in 2020, when there was this pandemic emergency thing, Metro froze its budget. The board told departments to just stay within the dollar amounts that they had been approved for the year before.

First, credit the Coalition for Environmental Health and Justice - @EYCEJ @CBECal @Earthjustice @LegalAidLA @LBACA_ @LiBRE_justice @NRDC & @UEPI. #CEHAJ has been fighting against harmful 710 Freeway widening for more than two decades.

This morning, Metro Board Planning Committee voted to adopt a "No Build" alternative for Metro/Caltrans 710 Freeway widening project. It's unprecedented for these agencies to do this - abandoning decades of work ($60+M worth) of designs/studies/engineering on widening. (a thread)

This is MAJOR. Local EJ advocates have pushed for years. TY @EYCEJ, @CBECal, @Earthjustice, @LegalAidLA, and others for your leadership. TY to @SupJaniceHahn for listening to advocates, and to the many stakeholders, including @Gateway_COG Ad Hoc, willing to listen and learn.

California’s Democratic Governor wants to give car owners 15 times what he wants to give transit riders. ($11.5B vs $750M) Gonna think about that next time someone says “transit isn’t good enough so I have to drive.”

Something kinda minor that pisses me (@JoeLinton) off. The Metro highway program says stuff like "we need to widen freeways because that's what Measure M/R voters approved" -- but then they turn around and use M/R funding for stuff that doesn't really match M/R. (a short thread)

Metro lower 710 Freeway flow chart color choices (from presentation last night): Red = comply with clean air law Blue/Green = widen freeway, more driving, more pollution, demolish homes/businesses

Infill development in a parking requirement world. You can’t mandate this sort of thing and then be surprised when units are expensive.

What the heck is this ⁦@latimes⁩? This framing directly implies that the DA himself is responsible for a violent crime surge which, btw, is happening in every part of the country, including in areas with very different DAs.
