The results contribute to the growing research that focuses on "civilization" as a supranational "imagined community" and further clarifies the multifaceted nature of the far right's identity profile. 8/8.

I assess the far right's civilizational discourse using quantitative and qualitative text analysis techniques on a corpus of 1,000+ party manifestos from EU members (1990-2020) and more than 650K+ tweets from parties and leaders in six Western European countries (2019-2021). 7/8.

Furthermore, this discourse is inherently racialized. It contrasts a European "us" against a Muslim "them" and treats Islam as an essentialized civilizational “other.” 6/8.

This discourse lends coherence to the far right's identity profile by portraying civilizationism as complementary to and partially constituted by nationalism. 5/8.

I argue the far right "makes sense" of these identities through its discourse. It presents European "civilization" as a supranational community linked by shared values (e.g., democracy and freedom) and rooted in the distinct nationalisms present on the continent. 4/8.

Especially given that European far-right parties are strongly opposed to the EU, their frequent appeals to "Europeanness" may appear surprising at first. 3/8.

European far-right parties often claim to defend both national identity and "European civilization" from impending threats. But what do they mean by "civilization" and how do they reconcile this supranational identity with their steadfast nationalism? 2/8.
