He strengthened Utah’s winter response by helping ensure additional emergency beds were available, oversaw the development of the state’s first microshelter community and expanded transparency and planning through new public data tools.

As coordinator, Wayne helped elevate homelessness. He was instrumental in launching Utah’s first statewide strategic plan, which brought together stakeholders, local governments and service providers around shared goals.

Wayne Niederhauser will retire on Dec. 5, 2025 after completing his tenure as Utah’s first State Homeless Coordinator. His legacy includes years of public service, highlighted by six years as senate president and nearly five years leading the state’s homelessness response.

Key Workforce Services items include proposed funding for SNAP administration, homeless services, unemployment insurance modernization and support for Medicaid eligibility implementation. A steady, forward-focused budget for a strong Utah.

Utah's key economic indicators are once again better than the national numbers. Nationally, job growth was only 0.9% and unemployment 4.3%. Growth was centered in education and health services, leisure and hospitality, and financial activities. https://t.co/V9kPy1cY4s

As we head into fall, Utah's job market is healthy. The economy is growing and unemployment is low. For the year ending in August, job counts grew by 1.9% (adding 33,600 jobs) and unemployment remained at 3.3%.

The campus is envisioned as a comprehensive hub where individuals experiencing homelessness can access the support and treatment they need to move from homelessness to stability and long-term self-reliance. It will provide app. 1,300 beds.
