This hearing just wrapped. My read is that it went worse for Vance/GOP challengers than expected. Roberts asked an early question revealing skepticism with their campaign finance challenge. And other than Kavanaugh and Alito, the conservative majority was mostly mum. We'll see...

The Supreme Court is hearing whether VP Vance can challenge a campaign finance law, but it's unclear that he can do so having so far disclaimed any 2028 run. Vance's lawyer says the court shouldn't "blind itself" to what is "obvious." #SCOTUS

Interesting: Justice Brett Kavanaugh takes what appears to be a shot at Citizens United, says the Supreme Court's campaign finance law decisions have reduced the power of political parties compared to outside groups with "negative effects on our constitutional democracy."

Justice Samuel Alito defends what he calls the "unfairly maligned decision in Citizens United" which he said levelled the playing field for all corporations with those that "control all of the national media."

No surprises in today’s #SCOTUS hearing on independent agencies. The conservatives seem poised to overturn 1935 precedent upholding their constitutionality. Trump‘s SG called the decision a “decaying husk.” Sotomayor said that would “destroy the structure of government.”

Big day for the federal bureaucracy at #SCOTUS today, where the justices will consider overturning 90 years of precedent protecting the independence of certain gov’t agencies. At issue is whether Trump can fire a Democratic member of the Federal Trade Commission w/o cause.

The Supreme Court will decide this term whether Trump can deny U.S. citizenship to the children of temporary and undocumented immigrants through executive order. Unlike the last case involving injunctions, this one presents the merits straight on. No argument date yet.

Scalia’s name came up 19 times at arguments yesterday. Recently, Alito took umbrage at an attorney’s criticism of an opinion from the “founding father of textualism.” Opinions from other justices, especially liberals, don’t hold as much weight on today’s conservative #SCOTUS.

Later on, Justice Gorsuch said members of the military could even be criminally prosecuted for following an unlawful order from the president, which he said was a "check" on the president's powers. Once again, Trump's lawyer, now the solicitor general, agreed. "Absolutely."
