Our prayers will be with Linda, who was Kit’s constant partner, and Sam, of whom Kit was always and rightly so proud.

He had a relentless and penetrating intelligence, a commitment to public service, and a passion for improving the lives of the people he served. He was also my friend, and a great mentor throughout my service in the Senate.

Brenda and I are both saddened by the passing of Kit Bond. Missouri has produced many good politicians and public servants, but Kit was a statesman, whose decades of service left an indelible mark on our state and country.

She and I opposed each other in a hotly contested election, but Jean always conducted herself with the graciousness and dignity that characterized both her public and personal life. My prayers are with her family and all those who were privileged to be her friends.

All of us who love Missouri, and knew Jean Carnahan, will mourn at her passing. She was a woman of great heart who accomplished great things for her state and for those she loved.

Why should America support Ukraine? Basically, because the enemy of my adversary is my friend.

In fact, we drew down our forces in Europe until by 2013 we didn’t have a single tank on the continent. Putin took Crimea a year later.

An explanation of Russian policy under Putin. The key point: Putin isn’t our enemy because we have forces in Europe; we have forces in Europe because Putin views us as an enemy.

The cost and risk will be much higher than if we had not weakened ourselves in the first place.

Since then the United States has increased its forward posture in Eastern Europe but very modestly. We will now have to lead NATO in positioning forces to protect the Baltic and EE members in the alliance.

Putin began his aggression against #Ukraine in 2014. That’s not a coincidence.

That’s because we drew down forces in defense of NATO after the Cold War. By 2013, the U.S. Army didn’t have a single tank in Europe.

For years we have been “outranged and outgunned” in Eastern Europe. That’s a quote from the U.S. Army Chief of Staff in 2016.

The strength of America’s armed forces is the foundation of our entire foreign policy. Their most fundamental mission is to deter direct kinetic aggression, which gives time for diplomatic and economic tools to protect our security and our interests.

This is the best damn short article I’ve ever read about how to defend #Taiwan and deter war in the South China Sea. If we don’t do these simple things we’re going to be faced with the choice of fighting under unfavorable circumstances or giving up.

Modesty forbids me from saying how great this podcast is – but it was great to visit with @RogerZakheim about #Beijing’s real agenda. #RNDF
