Jewish on Campus is honored to attend a roundtable on antisemitism hosted at The White House this week. We thank
@WhiteHouse
for its commitment to combating the rise of antisemitism in the US and for highlighting student advocacy. We are bringing your voices with us.
Antisemitism on college campuses is a growing issue, and the only way to fight it is for Jewish students to support each other.
Jewish on Campus is student-run for a reason. When you share your story with us, we know how to help—because we have been there too.
Hearing ideas that the Holocaust was about “religious discrimination” or just “two white groups fighting” should be alarming enough to demand change in Holocaust education.
Since Wednesday, Jewish students at Columbia University have avoided dining halls, libraries, classrooms, dorm rooms, & walkways because they don't feel safe being Jewish on campus.
Jewish students have reported stories that are hard to read. Let's talk about it...
We are horrified to hear that a predominately Jewish fraternity at George Washington University was broken into and vandalized. Their Torah was destroyed.
“When I say the Holocaust wasn’t special, I mean that.”
“[Hamas] fought back and killed a handful of people…”
“Zionists (all of whom are white supremacists) are not invited. Ever.”
These are real (yes, real) quotes from an email sent by a Columbia University club leader.
We are appalled that for the second year in a row, the AEPI house at
@RutgersU
was egged during their annual Yom HaShoah name reading. The Jewish fraternity is repeatedly targeted by antisemitism, and the university needs to be doing more to stop it. This is beyond unacceptable.
We’re going to put it plain and simple for you. On college campuses, “Zionist” has become a euphemism for “Jewish.” Changing the name you call us is not activism; it’s antisemitism.
We are honored to have joined
@SecondGentleman
roundtable on antisemitism today. Jewish students must be at the forefront of the fight against antisemitism on college campuses, and we are thankful the
@WhiteHouse
gave us a seat at the table.
We are horrified by the recent display of antisemitism at Rutger’s University, and we stand in solidarity with their Jewish community.
Thank you to
@hinduoncampus
for your allyship. As always: we are strongest when we stand together.
THREAD: Today, a billboard truck was seen driving around University of California, Berkeley’s campus with the words, “All in favor of banning Jews, raise your right hand.” A picture of Hitler was projected.
Breaking: the University of Toronto Student Union passed a BDS resolution limiting Jewish students’ access to resources and Jewish life on campus.
@UofT
has a pattern of letting Jewish students down, and it is more important than ever that the administration break that cycle.
You don’t need a large internet following to share your story with us! We take incident submissions from all college students. It can be done anonymously, and even if you choose not to have your submission made public it will help our data set.
Professors’ academic freedom to express their political views does not extend to actively creating a hostile and discriminatory environment for Jewish students.
Jewish on Campus is an organization created by students, for students. Together, we will be the change. Telling your story is about so much more than an Instagram post.
BREAKING: Early this morning, a man threw a Molotov cocktail at a New Jersey synagogue in an arson attempt. This is not normal. This should not be normal.
THREAD: Jewish sexual assault survivors were told they weren’t welcome at University of Vermont or George Washington University due to their Zionism. Such accusations are a dangerous trend on college campuses dependent on age-old antisemitic libels. Let’s talk about why...
Students for Justice in Palestine at
@TuftsUniversity
is demanding students comply with BDS, listing Jewish organizations by name, and isolating any group that normalizes Israel. This poses a serious threat to Jewish students at Tufts. What is the university doing about it?
Students at CUNY Baruch College plan to host a “rally against Hillel.” They say, “Hillel go to hell,” using a red triangle—a symbol used by Hamas.
Let’s be clear: an attack on Hillel is an attack on Jewish campus life. This is antisemitism, plan and simple.
THREAD: The Department of Education has opened an investigation of the University of Vermont in response to a Title VI complaint filed by Jewish on Campus and the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law. Let's talk about it:
It is unacceptable that
@CUNYLaw
chose a commencement speaker who has repeatedly expressed violence and hate towards Jews. It is unacceptable that Jewish students are expected to be present to antisemites being given a platform.
“Jews will call anything antisemitic” Actually, we have a very specific definition from IHRA of what constitutes antisemitism, but you don’t want to adopt it because then it would be harder to get away with being an antisemite.
THREAD: On Yom Kippur, Cornell University hosted an event with a professor who compared Israel to Nazi Germany, perpetuated antisemitic conspiracy theories, and dismissed claims of rising antisemitism.
In an act of blatant antisemitism,
@SunriseMvmtDC
has demanded 3 Jewish groups (National Council for Jewish Women, Jewish Council on Public Affairs, and Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism) be removed from a voting rights rally.
We commend the students at
@DukeU
for adopting the IHRA definition of antisemitism. The fight against antisemitism on campus is far from over, but it’s good to see progress.
THREAD: On the second night of Sukkot, a protest took place outside the
@GWtweets
Hillel building, where students chanted, “Israel is a terrorist state” and held a banner that read, “War criminals GTFO.” 1/3
On December 10, 2019, two men opened fire on a Kosher supermarket in Jersey City.
Their lives were lost for one reason: because they were Jewish.
We remember:
Joseph Seals
Mindy Ferencz
Moshe Deutsch
Douglas Miguel Rodriguez
May their memories be a blessing.
When a student organizer at Columbia proudly declares on the internet that we should be grateful that they're “not just going out and murdering Zionists,” listen to Jewish students when we tell you we’re terrified.
Today we remember the victims of the attack on the Hypercacher kosher supermarket, who were killed seven years ago simply because they were Jewish. May their memories be a blessing.
Jews often get accused of exaggerating antisemitism. We’re told we make things up for attention. Stats released today by the FBI show that 57.5% of religiously motivated hate crimes in 2020 targeted Jews, despite us being just 2% of the population. Do we have your attention now?
Despite the current climate of antisemitism, thousands of Jews will be at the Celebrate Israel Parade in New York City today, showing that hate will not intimidate us.
Faculty and students
@Princeton
and
@Georgetown
signed a letter claiming Israel is based in Jewish Supremacy, a term coined by former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke.
Antisemitism is the new normal on college campuses.
Students for Justice in Palestine at
@TuftsUniversity
released a “BDS Pledge,” which beyond an economic and academic boycott of Israel, calls for the boycott of any club that normalizes Israel—a majority of which are Jewish-run.
After several terrorist attacks in Israel, hundreds rallied in New York City demanding that universities stop allowing Zionists at their schools. When people say “globalize the Intifada” they’re asking for worldwide targeting of Jews. It has to stop.
18 months ago, Jewish students had nowhere to turn when experiencing antisemitism on campus. So we created Jewish on Campus, and have been supporting students ever since. Really want to support students? Work with us, not over us.
This morning, Google defined Jew as “to bargain with someone in a miserly or petty way.” Though since changed, we have yet to see any comment from Google. For those wondering, Jew is not a verb.
Today we remember the 850,000 Jews who were ethnically cleansed from the MENA region and the lack of response and acknowledgement from the UN towards the countries responsible .
For years I've asked Jewish college students how much antisemitism they experience. It's always the same: AIPAC-type students say there's a lot + link it to anti-Israel activism. Lefty students say there's very little + that they're far more alienated by the Jewish establishment
Breaking: Two swastikas, an SS, and a Magen David were found carved at the freshman dorms at
@AmericanU
. Listen to Jewish students when we say antisemitism is alive and well on college campuses.
This is a reminder that universities across the country still have their first day of classes on Rosh Hashanah. We ask ourselves, who is at the table when these decisions are made?
Rosh Hashanah begins at sunset on Monday, 9/6 and ends Wednesday night, 9/8. Yom Kippur begins at sunset on Wednesday, 9/15 and ends Thursday night, 9/16. We ask that professors keep these dates in mind and accommodate your Jewish students accordingly.
Part of keeping Jewish students safe on campus is administrations responding adequately to antisemitism. We commend
@UofT
for announcing they will withhold fees from the Graduate Students’ Union over their decision to adopt BDS.
In addition to potentially limiting the availability of food to Jewish students, notice that only Kosher food is mentioned. It is only Jews who are subjected to the anti-Israel litmus test- in this case just in order to eat.
A hateful message full of Holocaust inversion, blood libel, Elders of Zion conspiracies, and threats was sent to the Chabad rabbi at George Washington University.
Having this protest outside of an inherently Jewish space, at a time when it's known that Jewish students would be using this space, shows the explicit targeting of Jewish students. Harassing Jews in the name of the Israel-Palestine conflict is antisemitism, plain and simple. 2/3
We say this because no one else will:
Jews, we see you. Explicit Nazi imagery was shown in the US Capitol today. Hitler salutes. Swastikas.
Our message to all: condemn this, or do not call yourself our ally. Jews are in danger. Check on your friends.
We are shocked and appalled to learn that a gunman entered Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas and took several hostages, including the rabbi.
This Shabbat, two men were arrested at Penn Station as the result of intelligence gathering done by the FBI and NYPD in an aim to prevent a growing threat to the New York Jewish community. This news brings with it fear and pain. It’s time to speak up for the Jewish community.
Earlier this week, a Jewish student at Tufts University was awoken by laughter and loud banging in the middle of the night. The next morning, he saw that his Mezuzah had been torn off the doorpost in a blatant act of hatred.
As you watch demonstrators use “Zionists” as a lazy code for Jews, remember that this isn’t new. Jews have been targeted for being "capitalists" and "communists," "isolationists" and "globalists." Changing what you call us doesn’t absolve you of antisemitism.
Rabbi Yudi wrote back a powerful and moving response attached below. He reminds us that we all must stand together as proud Jews, unintimidated in the face of hatred.
The resolution purposefully targets and isolates Jewish students for their Jewish identity and connection to Israel. It is yet another example of why BDS resolutions are rooted in antisemitism.
Thank you to the
@SecondGentleman
and
@deborahlipstadt
for hosting the Roundtable on Combatting Antisemitism. Click the link to tune into the important conversations being had amongst Jewish and American leaders.
.
@lufthansa
kicked all the Jewish passengers off a flight when one person wasn’t compliant. “It was Jewish people who made the mess, Jewish people made the problem.”
This kind of rhetoric is used to ostracize and vilify Jews, and when it’s not called out, it puts Jews in danger.
Today, on Shabbat, neo-Nazis marched through Nashville, waving swastika flags and heiling Hitler.
It’s 2024. The Jewish community can’t look away from antisemitism. Neither should you.
At
@colgateuniv
, a Chabad menorah was torn down, with its wires cut and its light bulbs knocked out. Jews deserve to celebrate their holidays safely. Jewish students deserve to practice safely on college campuses. What more do we have to say?
Today is Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day, where we commemorate the victims of the Romani genocide at the hands of Nazi Germany. May their memories be a blessing.
Before you try to “cancel” a Holocaust survivor for being a Zionist, maybe ask yourself what that says about Jews and our need for Israel, instead of calling a child refugee of concentration camps a genocide apologist.
This past week, the Hillel sukkah at
@miamiuniversity
was intentionally taken down by three unknown perpetrators. The incident was captured by security cameras and has been reported to local police.
Students at
@pomonacollege
voted to cut funding to any org supporting Israel, including Hillel and Chabad.
Jewish students were sent a clear message: you don’t belong.
Incredibly antisemitic posters accusing Jews of controlling the world were found at Arizona State University.
@ASU
needs to investigate this immediately.
Tune into CNN tonight at 9:00 p.m. EDT for an hour-long documentary focusing on antisemitism in the united States. The special includes the antisemitic discrimination Jewish and Israeli survivors have suffered at SUNY New Paltz.
49 years ago today, during the 1972 Summer Olympics, 11 Israeli team members were murdered by the Black September terrorist group in what is recognized as the Munich Massacre. Today, we take the time to remember those who were killed. May their memories be a blessing.
This hateful act of antisemitic violence must be immediately condemned and thoroughly investigated by
@GWtweets
administration. An attack on Jewish spaces and the destruction of a Torah is an attack on all Jews.
Outwardly expressing your Judaism, whether it be through a Magen David, a kippah, or a mezuzah, shouldn’t be political. More importantly, it shouldn’t be dangerous.
