Wanted to clarify this for folks.
This is outsourced animation.
It was not done in house at DreamWorks.
And to be fair to the studio who did it. They were probably given 30 seconds to animate in one day. No hate towards them.
OH… THE ANIMATION IS… Okay to be fair I haven’t watched any 3D Animated cartoons recently, BUT WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE THIS??? Like I’d rather they just do all keys zero inbetweens, it looks so stiff with the linear tweens— I might cry 😭😭

Who doesn’t love pirates? Here’s another school project from 2018. The initial assignment prompt was to have a character sit and stand. One of my favorite parts of the project was doing the voiceover. Talking like a pirate for an hour in a sound booth was a blast.

Because it's 3d animated. It's way easier to do this kind of interesting choreography when you don't have to draw everything by hand. Even the modern anime studios best known for their fight scenes (Mappa, Ufotable, etc) make heavy use of 3d.

This is a good example of how many passes it can take to nail down the something. The goal was to push the lighting to really focus on the villain and let everything else fall away into darkness. It's a quick shot, so the audience doesn't have time to look all over the frame.

Sometimes people try and replicate the old old stop motion vibe. But this feels like a slightly updated blend between old stop motion aesthetic & something more modern.
Great work, Sasa! I love it.
Recipe for traditional last minute festive animation:
- find animation you did years ago
- give it a facelift by adding some hair
- render (twice, because ofc something jumped mid sequence)
- eat loads of cookies in the process
