Some of the prettiest sharks live where visibility’s terrible—sometimes you can only see 2–3 feet ahead. I prefer 80° water and 80 feet of visibility, but that’s not always an option.

It’s Option 1: the Salmon Shark (Lamna ditropis)! 🍣🦈 A northern Pacific cousin of the mako and white. Fast, warm-blooded, and built for cold water. They hunt salmon—hence the name—and can outswim most boats when they want to.

It’s Option 1: the Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus)! 🇬🇱🦈 Slow, ancient, and cold-water all the way. They can live for centuries—some may have been born before the American Revolution. Mostly scavengers, cruising the Arctic in near darkness.

Tiger sharks have a tightly coiled spiral valve in their intestines that gives them more surface area to pull nutrients from food. It’s more complex than in most sharks, which helps them digest almost anything they eat and go weeks between big meals.

It’s Option 3: the Leopard Shark (Triakis semifasciata)! 🐆🦈 A California favorite. You’ll spot them in shallow bays, usually in groups, patterned like a leopard from nose to tail. They dig through sand for clams, crabs, and little fish.
