I write all of this with the caveat that I can see how overstimulation via screens is highly problematic for young children and developing minds. But judging and curtailing teen communication and mental health is so much more complex than blaming devices.

In addition to the sound concerns that correlation doesn't yield causation, moral panic over smartphone usage also makes incredible assumptions about who uses smartphones and why. That thinking in and of itself yields troubling biases about who can communicate online and how.

My first book covers this topic in depth, but changes in comms technology have long induced moral panic around children and their perceived sociability. And those who whip up panic about what the "kids are doing" tend to be those most interested in preserving "traditional" ideas.

Briefly pausing my X retirement: I'm glad to see skepticism re: Haidt's ecent book about smartphones inducing anxiety (i.e. & ). Tech isn't that deterministic and it's destructive to keep making that argument!.
