@rubyaustralia Do you want to learn how object shapes work, why we implemented them for Ruby 3.2? If you're curious to learn more about Ruby internals, or how instance variables work, @JemmaIssroff has the talk for you!

Now that I am waiting to board my flight to Houston, I can't help think about the great experience everyone had at #RubyConfMini a little over a week ago. It was one of the best conference experiences I've had and here is why: ๐งต

Today @jhawthorn merged a PR that changes Classes and Modules to use object shapes for storing instance variables rather than a hash table. Class IVAR reads are 2x faster, and it saved 16MB RAM! ๐

Object Shapes were introduced in #6386 for T_OBJECT and "extended ivars" with the plan to later implement it for Classes and Modules, which previously were using an st_table. This...

Someone asked if @RubyConfMini was still accepting talk proposals. I don't actually know of any way to check which Ruby conferences currently have open CFPs. Does anyone know of a resource that would say which CFPs are currently open?

Also, I got a question about iv_count on the undef shape a few times, so wanted to answer it here if anyone is curious! Yes, it was intentional that iv_count didnโt decrement on undef shapes. iv_count is used as an index into the objectโs instance variable array ...

If you were at @euruko please test for covid. I've heard of several cases so far. Please also tell anyone who might not see this. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, and hope those who are positive feel better soon!

Who should I be chasing to find sponsors for RubyConf mini? Are you looking to find (or sell to) excellent Rubyists of exquisite taste? Sponsoring mini would seem like a no-brainer to me. Emails are open: andy@goodscary.com

underused Array method: bsearch. If you're `find`ing on a sorted array... you could probably bsearch and it'll be faster. Of course @JemmaIssroff already wrote up a great guide:

The hope with doing this was that each keynote speaker would get the praise / attention they deserve. One keynote in and already seems to be panning out! Maybe we should do this style release for non keynote speakers too??
We're going to announce our keynote speakers daily, starting today. We can't wait to share.... stay tuned ๐
