For the Nativity Fast (a.k.a. Advent), beginning Nov. 15 on the Eastern church calendar, I'm stepping away from Twitter. I'll see you back on here when the Angels sing and the shepherds gather to celebrate the birth of God in the flesh! Θ

"Fantasy novels often do a better job of imagining. Trees speak and animals discuss among themselves. "We think to ourselves, 'What if trees could actually speak?' But we never seem to think, 'What if we actually knew how to listen?'" —Fr. Stephen Freeman (photo is his) Θ

Demonic. Lord, defend us. They are sheep without a shepherd. ☦️
🚨#BREAKING: Several churches are now adopting AI-powered chatbots that let members interact with an AI version of Jesus, encouraging them to confess their sins, ask spiritual questions, and seek help for personal issues.

@MethodMinistry @OzarksJon "How do you know your church has normative authority?" Because of what the NT says about the Church, and because we are the Church of the NT. Jerusalem, Antioch, Thessalonica, Berea, Philippi, Athens, Ephesus, etc. ... that's the Church I belong to, from AD 33 until today. 2/2 Θ

“This is why we baptize children, although they have no sins, so that sanctification, justification, sonship, inheritance, brotherhood will be added to them, so that they may become members of Christ and a dwelling-place of the spirit.” — St John Chrysostom

@joeljmiller @megynkelly So the argument runs that Epstein sexually abused children but it's kind of OK because they were the adult kind of children? Like Doug Wilson saying a man who abused a 14-year-old was "in a romantic relationship" with "a beautiful and striking...remarkably mature young woman." Θ

By the way, who is the guy to the left of #8? I'm saddened to realize that I recognize everyone else on here...I think that's a bad sign. 😬

In Europe, secularism—a public life that is not tied to a Christian Church or specifically religious at all—owes much of its power to the horrors of the 30 Years' War. Christians killed Christians in the tens of thousands, for a whole generation, over sectarian differences... Θ
What do you really know about 17th century Europe? Well, I'm reading about the "30 years War" and what strikes me is the massive often forgotten levels of destruction and human suffering it left in its wake. So, here's a (simplified) explainer.

November 14 is the feast day of the Holy Apostle Philip (see John 1:43-51). For thus reason the 40-day Advent fast, which begins Nov. 15 and ends when we celebrate the Nativity of Christ at Christmas, is sometimes called "St. Philip's Fast." Θ

Let us attend! Θ
Over the years as an Orthodox Christian I learned that the transmission of the faith happens person to person. I learned instinctively not to embrace completely any idea I had read until I had encountered it "in the wild." In the age of AI, this will be an invaluable discipline.

[But] hear [this], Terah, my father; for I will make known to thee the God who hath made everything, not these we consider as gods. Who then is He? or what is He? Who hath crimsoned the heavens, and made the sun golden, And the moon lustrous, and with it the stars; And hath
