Grand Slam Track should end each meet with a 4x4. Teams are built with 4 competitors from different event groups:. Short Distance.Long Distance.Short Sprints.Long Sprints.Long Hurdles.

What is more impressive?. How fast you can guess the Wordle. How many attempts it takes you.

You have to run faster than what the collegiate records were when I was in college to get into NCAAs in the Mile and 3k. and I’m not even old, right?. RIGHT???.

Man. I’m genuinely sports fan / vacation guy bummed about World Road Champs not being in San Diego. So long beach. Goodbye course-side screaming in flippy floppies. Bye bye rooftop umbrella drink oceanside bar with TV streaming replays at sunset.

Wavelight at champs might be interesting…. but only if the racers can’t see it. Like a first down line or the WR line in swimming. In no way should it influence runners’ decisions. Even as a strictly audience focused mechanism I’m not completely sold. Racing is the focus.

Time is a description of the effort it takes to defeat an opponent. It takes great opponents to achieve great efforts. The efforts in the Mile and 3,000m at the Millrose Games yesterday were world record ones.

This is really the grand experiment this year, and what the future hinges on- for GST and for the sport outside of federation competition.

If GST can show numbers, they can go back to the negotiating table and push track from being a pay to be seen property to a pay for property.

Many meets don’t have the means to do this, so they settle for a small amount from track-focused-streaming, & pay social media, promotional ‘news’ outlets, influencers to talk about and promote their meets. …or get creative with ways to reach as broad an audience as they can.

Track currently operates where the audience is not big enough to command bids from major broadcast/streaming outlets so meets, brands etc pay for to be on these platforms, or get paid little, or only thru ads shown by sponsors they can accrue instead of entities paying them.

🧵Big that GST was able to get on both network TV and streaming (CW & Peacock). Congrats to their team! Their goal this year is to show numbers. They’re attempting to shift the leverage at the negotiating table for track.

It’s time to once again remind myself of this. Back in my day, Leo Manzano was the coolest bc he was the only college kid breaking 4. We also texted on keypads with real buttons ;).
