#bills
have to win a SB at some point but im not sure if there was a better pure rebuild in the NFLs salary cap era than what they have done in Buffalo.
Teams with the most projected cap space in 2020
1 Colts- $91.8M
2 Dolphins- $91.4M
3 Bills- $81.8M
4 Bucs- $81.5M
5 Cowboys- $79.5M
6 Broncos- $62M
7 Giants- $61.9M
8 Titans- $54.5M
9 Seahawks- $57.9M
10 Raiders- $53.3M

Every time a new QB contract gets done all I can think of is how did the
#Chiefs
pull off what they did with Mahomes. They are in such a great position
Teams with at least 60% of their roster being "homegrown" players:
Ravens-72%
Vikings- 71%
Packers-67%
Rams- 66%
Chargers- 62%
Cowboys- 62%
Saints- 61%
Despite the way people look at the
#Rams
they actually ranked 6th in the NFL in homegrown players. They had the most drafted players in the NFL on their roster this year. That's been overshadowed by the big trades
The
#Bills
will carry about $31.1 million in dead money for Diggs. Pretty much a disaster extension for them. Wound up paying an extra $20.9M in 2022 and 2023 to come away with a net of less than a 2nd rounder next year.
For the
#Steelers
I dont know how you spin this as anything more than a disaster. They spent over $29M in new money for basically one additional year that resulted in no playoffs and got taken to the woodshed by Brown starting in week 17. For all that they get a 3 and 5 back.
Obviously cap space is very fluid right now but the current leaders in estimated 2020 cap space, including some projected carryover are
1 Colts- $138M
2 Dolphins- $113M
3 Texans- $91M
4 Bills- $85.4M
5 Cowboys- $85M
6 Seahawks- $75M
7 Cardinals- $69M
8 Ravens- $64M
#Dolphins
wound up spending $45.525 million for Shaq Lawson, Kyle Van Noy, and Ereck Flowers who were all signed last year as free agents. All are now gone.
Devastating loss for the
#Bills
who were about as all in as a team could be. Will be about $49M over the salary cap next year and likely going to have to keep pushing salary with the same team again
As we get to final cutdowns here are the teams with the most original signings still competing for a spot in the NFL
1. Ravens- 112
2. Cowboys - 107
3. Vikings- 104
4. Rams- 102
5. Patriots/Packers/Eagles- 93
Ravens almost always rank at the top every year. Great FO.
Here is a quick look at every teams estimated 2021 salary cap space against their 2020 record
Top right= good record, good cap position
Top left= good record, bad cap position
Bottom right= bad record, good cap position
Bottom left= disaster
@billbarnwell
The Giants organization and fans have done a good job of embracing that the team is terrible and are having fun with a nice little story...The Jets somehow think they are a playoff contender
If the
#Saints
cut every player on their roster in 2024 that had a positive salary cap savings they would create just $15.375M in cap room. They are currently around $85M over the cap. So this isn't really a situation where you can reset anymore. It simply isnt feasible
How bad has the
#Jets
front office been the last few years? About 14% of their cash spent this year is spent on players who have been cut. The next closest team is at 6.8%. The NFL average is 2%.
If we cross out the matching rounds, ultimately the
#Seahawks
wound up trading
Russell Wilson, a 3rd, and Bradley McDougald
for
Jamal Adams, two 2nds, Shelby Harris, Noah Fant, Drew Lock, and a 5th.
Assuming a $256M salary cap in 2024 the teams that project with the most effective cap space (includes current carryover from 2023):
1. Patriots- $115M
2. Bears- $99M
3. Commanders- $85M
4. Titans- $84M
5. Texans- $81M
6. Colts- $77M
7. Bengals- $75M
8. Lions- $70M
9. Cardinals-…
Teams with enough cap space to trade for Xavien Howard:
Jaguars
Broncos
Panthers
Jets
Chargers
Browns
Lions
49ers
Bengals
Football Team
Colts
Vikings
Patriots
Steelers
Adam Gase has had two head coaching jobs in the NFL. In both cases he was tasked with working with a highly drafted QB. In both cases he failed. Both teams he left will wind up in complete rebuilds once he is gone. There is no defense.
#Jets
Including trades the current "leaders" in dead money
1. Bears- $45.2M
2. Seahawks- $40.6M
3. Eagles- $36.5M
4. Texans- $35.6M
5. Saints- $29.4M
6. Packers- $24.6M
7. Steelers- $24M
8. Raiders- $23.3M
9. Jaguars- $23.1M
10. Vikings- $22.1M
Jets have the least at $1.6M
The
#Cowboys
currently lead the NFL with being responsible for starting the career of 82 players currently in the NFL. Ravens are 2nd with 77 followed by the Vikings with 75, 49ers with 74 and Patriots with 71
Wait a minute. The Cowboys released Cooper Rush? From what I heard on Twitter on Saturday signing Andy Dalton meant dumping Prescott not Rush. What a shocking turn of events.
Here is a look at how much estimated value each team added to their roster during the draft (y axis) against what they were expected to gain based on draft position (x axis).
The only team that may still have significant salary cap hurdles to clear is the
#Chargers
. Unless they did something last night they are around $25M over. Will need to decide on Bosa, Allen, Mack, and Williams before 4PM. Those four count for over $142M on the cap
Deshaun Watson got a contract that has guarantees that stay in place if the NFL suspends him. Kyler Murray has to go to study hall to ensure he doesn't lose his.
The teams that drafted the best from 2011 to 2019 in terms of 2nd contract vs 1st contract APY were
1. Ravens (5.2X more salary)
2. Texans (5X)
3. Bills (4.2X)
4. Rams (4.2X)
5. Chiefs (4.0X)
Here is the thing with the "cap is fake" stuff. Short term nobody is impacted by the salary cap. Its easy to manipulate and everyone can get under the cap. The problem is the long term for a team. When you keep pushing and pushing you eventually get to one of two paths
#Giants
will have $24 million in dead money for Beckham and Vernon alone this year. Both could have been moved last season to avoid their salaries last year and saved themselves about $35 million. They totally misread what that team was.
The Bengals won 2 games two years ago and 4 games last year and now are in the AFC title game. It doesnt take 4 years to turn things around when you pick the right QB and surround him with some good pieces.
Teams with the most cap room in 2021 (includes current cap cap carryover from 2020) based on a $175M salary cap
1. Colts- $91M
2. Patriots- $70M
3. Jaguars- $64M
4. Jets- $62M
5. FT- $55M
6. Bengals- $41M
7. Chargers- $39M
8. Browns- $34M
9. Dolphins- $31M
10. Ravens- $31M
Just plugged in the numbers for the Wilson and Watson trades using the Fitzgerald-Spielberger chart. Not including discounts on future picks which I valued as the 16th pick of each round
Seahawks- 5,511 points plus 3 players
Texans- 5,808 points
Seattle got the better deal
#Raiders
have about $78.8M per year invested in Carr/Adams/Renfrow. They are 2-5 and scored 0 points today against a Saints defense that had been non-existent for the last few weeks.
The
#Cowboys
have overspent on positions like RB and LB and rarely utilize free agency. Bringing attention to a QB contract is just finding ways to deflect blame.
The turn against Jackson is something. Hed be the starting qb on all but a few teams in the nfl. Who cares about the guarantee. This is a league where carson wentz got traded twice. You can always move a qb contract.
Here is how much each team spent from 2019 to 2023 on the team vs playoff success (1 pt for WC loss, 4 div loss, 8 cc loss, 13 SB loss, 20 for SB win). KC basically breaks the league. 2nd post will have the graph without KC.
Once Roethlisberger makes it official I would expect the
#Steelers
to rework his contract for salary cap purposes. They can lower his cap number from $10.34M to $3.705M and defer $7.75M to 2023 by having him wait until June to officially retire.
Unless someone claims Alex Leatherwood the
#Raiders
will owe him an additional $5.9M and cap will jump to $7.86M this year. $14.39M contract was fully guaranteed. As bad as you can do with a 1st round pick
About 83% of Dallas' current roster began their career with the
#Cowboys
, which is the most in the NFL. Rams are 2nd with 80% followed by the Ravens, Packers, and Bucs all around 73%
I think my favorite contract stat of the season involves the
#Seahawks
Seattle has $42.4M per year invested in safety and special teams. That is more than their combined investment in corner, edge, and quarterback ($37.5M)
NFL scoring performance relative to their schedule through week 5
Top right= Good offense and defense
Top left= Bad offense, good defense
Bottom right= Good offense, bad defense
Bottom left= Bad offense, bad defense
At the end of the day Diggs 2022 extension has now become a one year, $43.1 million contract extension, all of which was guaranteed. Just an absurd win for a player.
Last one. Here are the teams running it back with the most similar rosters to 2022
1. Bengals/Bills- 75.9%
3. Ravens- 75.4%
4. Chargers- 75%
5. Jaguars- 73.8%
6. Commanders- 73.4%
7. Vikings- 72.9%
8. Dolphins- 72%
9. Giants- 70.9%
10. 49ers- 69.5%
There are 19 Giants from 2020 on other teams this year. The only two who make significant money are Dalvin Tolmlinson and Kevin Zeitler. 8 are on a PS. The rest are around the minimum, so Im not sure how many are really doing this.
Joe Judge (amid 10+ minute rant) said that there are players that were on the
#Giants
last year that have been calling him saying "how much they wish they were still here even though they’re getting paid more someone else.”
#Giants
