Former LMPD Det. John Mattingly's 2021 defamation lawsuit against attorney Steve Romines, who represented Breonna Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, has sat idle for a year until yesterday. Attorneys for Romines will take Mattingly's deposition Sept. 30.

Brett Hankison has filed a notice of appeal to the 6th Circuit for both his conviction and sentence in the Breonna Taylor case. He is expected to ask for a bond to remain out of prison while the case is on appeal. The DOJ has indicated it would not object.

The judge ordered that the lawsuits and issues while working with LMPD should be filed under seal and considered in the sentencing guidelines if there is an appeal. DOJ prosecutors did not react to or defend themsevles from any of the criticism by the judge.

Hankison was on the police merit board for years, determining whether other officers punishment by LMPD was fair. He was lauded for that yesterday. But he had issues while on the board that also were not mentioned.
