Son used his 4H steer money to buy the
@LEGO_Group
Titanic set. 9000+ pieces. About 4'6" long. About 20 hours actual build time for him. Good work, Cy! 👍
Three cattlemen from my neighborhood had herd dispersal at Russell Livestock Market today. Two others sold out a month ago. Hate to see things change like that.
Kids lost a bottle calf from last summer today, it truly was their calf, their project. They did everything right and still shit goes wrong. The life lessons the farm teaches can flat out SUCK.
Baffled by the money deer hunters have. Buy a way overpriced rough farm, kick the cattle off (cause cattle and deer don't coexist all of a sudden, even though they bought b/c of all the deer they saw) to maybe shoot 1 deer. Makes 1 expensive deer in my mind.
It is one of the nicest facilities. When I was a little kid, the owner, Tommy, would call me over and give me a dollar or two to go get a candy bar and pop. Seemed like every week he would slide me that $1 bill. Crystal clear memory.
Probably an unpopular opinion,
Beer being consumed on the floor of 4H steer show arena during the show is a bad look. Supposed to be a junior show, junior organization.
Local family has to make funeral plans for their 14-year-old son after an accident. Sure makes the things I worry about seem silly. It affects everyone in a small school.
Prayers and peace to the family.
Hey,
@HyVee
, you want to clear up this decision on pulling
@HertzogMeatCo
off your meat shelf yet? Sure feels like the big 4 Packers helped your decision. Would think a Midwest chain would love having a local born, raised, processed product on the shelf.
Just found out our county fair did away with the ultrasound/carcass classes. Nice. Take away from the kids raising actual production animals and not fluff balls.
Roads have ice. Truck did some doughnuts going down the hill, feedwagon went about 30 yards backward trying to go forward on fairly flat ground. Only logical thing to do is sit at a sale and try to buy more. Cattle is a mental disease.
Seeing posts of guys shining up their "old" but trusty machines. They aren't even 5yrs old! 15 yr old is new "here" 20 yr old is fairly new, 25 is pretty nice,

At church we honored our 90+ year old members. We have 11! Oldest will soon be 107!! No wheel chairs, 1 walker, and 3 sparsely used canes. Absolutely incredible! Equally impressive is all minds are still sharp. They all spoke at service today. That generation is a treasure
Blowin $6.50 corn to feed high dollar feeders with rising interest rates to sell finished cattle into a weak looking world economy....has to be a recipe for success!!
County fair weigh-ins. 2 old crop bottle calves for the +1 class and 2 commercial home raised feedlot steers. We aren't spending 5 digits for hairball calves. Our 4H goals are a little different than most people's.
Had a set of Triplets last year. I caught them side by side at the bunk eating yesterday. We supplemented with bottles, but Mama raised them, let us handle them, and bred back.
Our neighborhood just lost a 107 year old lady. Still lived on her own. Just think of all the changes she has seen, all the history she witnessed. At church, she was asked how many grandkids and great and great, greats she had, she replied, "Lots"!
If one vote from someone in the controlling party stopped a bill, well, that tells me the bill sucked and needed stopped. Get rid of the crap, get votes from the other side.
Everyone agrees the country needs infrastructure, it's the rest of the crap in the bill they don't.
@kennedycattleco
My 10 y.o. is doing a bottle calf, nothing fancy, Saved from uterine prolapse. He doesn't have the farming "bug" in him but he hasn't missed a bottle or complained, it has been HIS calf. I understand your proud comment! Wish more would remember what 4H is supposed to be.
Best thing I heard last week after going through all the snow, -20°, and wind came from a seed salesman who just started his own little herd. "Now I know why you cattle guys are pissed off all the time and don't have time to talk seed till it's time to plant, This sucks!!"
This post kinda bothered me. JBS telling quality is the key for US producers. We have quality! Assuming JBS is the leading importer of foreign beef that is not raised to the standards, scrutiny, or quality of US Beef, just to be blended with our high-quality beef
Brought out the old 6 row to do some small "pickle-patch" fields, admiring the beautiful scenery. Might be unpopular but rural America/communities was better off when everyone took 6 rows at time.
So far, I have found 3 things broke I didn't know about. Weird how it breaks sitting in the shed. Ran 1-3/4 hopper and blew a belt. Galvanized Gobbler is testing me, and we're only trying to get started.

Yeah, BQA thing pisses me off. I do that anyway. But they demand it for the "privilege" to sell to them, yet they can ship in all that water buffalo, big hump zebra looking monkey meat on a boat to mix with it. I'd bet that crap didn't have a BQA certificate.
Cold isn't terrible- but when your eyelashes keep freezing together while sorting cattle, and you have to keep taking gloves off to melt your face, that really becomes a hassle
WC MN: Hwy108 between I94 and Pelican Rapids (Ottertail County) a semi hauling hay bales cut the turn onto the highway too short and tipped (no inj) but traffic will be impacted w/some detours.
The planter had a couple bearings go out - so before it rains I'm doing a little controlled spilling. How were these things ever so popular in southern Iowa? no clue on population and depth can vary from 3.5 deep to seed on top of the ground.
Dad brag...Daughter was awarded the sportsmanship award at state tumbling. She also qualified for the national meet! Pretty neat to see her excitement.
I imagine a lot of guys got done harvesting the last few days and plan on watching football on this rainy Saturday. I imagine a lot of those same guys can't see the TV through their eyelids. 🥱💤
We apologize to our customers. Despite positive feedback from our local Hy-Vee stores and their management, corporate office (Des Moines Iowa) decided to remove our product. You can continue to buy direct from HERTZOG MEAT CO.

These guys lost the big north barn and half the west barn due to wind or small tornado on Friday. Pretty impressive it was cleaned up enough to hold a decent size sale today.
109% placements....I think runs have been smaller at every barn I go to. Either a lot of ranchers have retained ownership in big yards or every illegal crossing the border is bringing cattle with them.
Not very common in my neighborhood to mow 1st cutting alfalfa when the ground is dry and the tires don't pick up enough moisture to shine. Could be in trouble.
@GoddessofGrain
I really think some firm needs to do basic market meetings, like kindergarten style. A lot of market meetings just leave us in the dust because we are so far behind on marketing terms and strategies
