“Much is made of genius & talent, but the foundation of any life where you get to realize your ambitions is simply being able to out-last everyone through the tough, crappy times—whether thru sheer determination, a strong support network or simply a lack of options.” —Jeff J. Lin

Well, here's a shocking development. I logged in to @amazon today to upload a new @SABR book (sneak peek at the cover below...) and discovered our KDP account has been TERMINATED. The email says it's because we have been running multiple KDP accounts (we haven't).

Ever-insightul @JaneFriedman. This part especially resonates: "If it’s not bringing you joy, if it’s not something you actively look forward to (and especially if it’s something that feels anxiety producing or a burden), it’s time to let go of it.” https://t.co/qblSsigTW0

Writing advice is everywhere—newsletters, podcasts, workshops—but if you’re left feeling anxious and unproductive, there might be other reasons.

They’re the bogeymen of publishing. Along with prologues, adverbs, and semicolons, flashbacks may be the most vilified—and most misunderstood—of storytelling devices. @FoxPrintEd offers insight:

Flashback can be a potent tool for presenting essential backstory, as long as you apply it without interrupting the story’s forward momentum.

Warhol: "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." Amazon: "In the future, everyone will have AI-generated biographies for sale at our site, that are completely untrue and that we avidly market and promote." https://t.co/6qG6Cyuyp8

It seems scammers who use AI to mimic writers are getting smarter after a journalist found a book that bore a strong resemblance to his own.

Recent headlines: “Agents aren’t making money.” “Authors aren’t making money.” “Trade publishing staffers aren’t making money.” Who, exactly, is making money? This seems worthy of further examination. Have a great Tuesday, y’all!

Lovely advice/reminders and true in my experience. Wish I had figured some of this out the first time around. I've found 7/8 to be particularly key.

As of today, my wife and I have been together for 30 years. (We met the first week of college.) Here are the 9 lessons I've learned in that time about, not including the advice my parents gave me: Always be too poor to afford a divorce.

Aside from a query or proposal, here’s a rundown of four other pitch packages you will need before, during, and after your book comes out, roughly in order of importance and utility—by @amylbernstein.

When soliciting blurbs or appearances on podcasts, its important to convey—in just a few lines—what you and your writing are about.

Is writing your memoir likely to justify your time and energy from a financial perspective? Almost certainly not. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t write it.

There are many different places in the overall timeline of your novel that your story could begin. So what makes one option superior to another? @manzanitafire offers clear guidance.

Being up front about your quirks and weaknesses makes for powerful true stories. But overdoing the crazy for comic effect, at least in a personal narrative, can quickly read false and feel tiresome. @JoniBCole offers wisdom on humor:

This author didn’t think of herself as a humor writer until her readers told her otherwise, so she dug into what makes her work funny.

More changes at #KDP: to combat abuse (read: crappy AI-generated books), daily volume limits on new titles per user are being lowered. This @PublishersWkly article says 3 titles per user, but the #Amazon announcement doesn't give a number #WritingCommunity

In what Amazon says is another effort to guard against possible abuse of AI in the creation of books, KDP users will be allowed to post no more than three books daily on the self-publishing platform.
