I typed until my fingers bled - or, rather, I bit my nails until my fingers bled. By the end, my eyes wouldn't focus, I had a near constant headache, and something weird was going on with my right shoulder. https://t.co/Vs3GrXtoj5

...was that I was very fortunate. I was selling enough books that I could afford to turn down a movie deal. I didn't have to pretend to be comfortable with this. I could walk away. It was all too easy to imagine what could have happened if he'd found me earlier.

She'll claim she was merely a facilitator and that I did the hard work (inflating my ego is one of the many tasks at which she excels). But let me remind the world's readers that their favourite authors probably couldn't afford to write if not for their quietly wonderful agents.

A lot of people have supported this series - readers, booksellers, and most importantly of all, my publisher, Scholastic Australia. But it was Clare who got me in the door at Scholastic HQ, and in many other doors since.

I meet a lot of very talented, extremely hard-working authors who can't earn a living from their writing alone. That's always humbling, because I'm aware that the main difference between me and them is that I have Clare and they don't.

BEHOLD ITS GRISLY GLORY:
Drawing Tim Blake from @JackHeathWriter HANGMAN series, book #3 HIDEOUT... @cgragland is such a great narrator... Tim looks a little tougher than the book, but it's from everyone else's perspective of the cannibal... great books #art #horror #hangman #consumer #drawing

I can't help thinking that social media and web browsing are all-consuming activities which leave users with very little time for books. Meaning that the more likely someone is to notice me online, the less likely they are (on average) to read my work.

And I'm a full-time writer, with forty hours per week to devote to my craft. Most authors have to write around a day job. How the heck do they find time to manage a web presence?

That's just Instagram. Twitter was even more bananas. I wish I could get as much attention for my real books as my pretend ones! π
