A damp, early doors visit to the Plough on the outskirts of Christleton. This is where I definitively fell in love with pubs. I was about 13 and Dad took me here one Xmas Eve. The place was packed. Mince pies and carol singing. Bonhomie filled the air. It was magical.

Bear's Paw, Newton An excellent JW Lees tied-house estate pub in Chester's suburbs. Good community vibe and a Boston Terrier on the prowl for snacks. Spot the ex-Chester player!

Pub Sign of the Week: The Boffin, Kirkby, Merseyide. A long gone estate pub that was presumably named after the scientists working at the local factories. I used to like Higsons. What's in the top corner? Look like Robbie the Robot from the Forbidden Planet. #PubSignThursday

Pub Sign of the Week: Horse & Jockey, Ellesmere Port. Is there any reason why a pub near Ellesmere Port docks should have such an equestrian name? Let's pretend it's due to the old Hooton Park racecourse where Vauxhall's now stands. The sign's gone too alas. #PubSignThursday

Seeing as the planning application for demolition of the Wheatsheaf at Nomansheath (to be replaced with nine dwellings) has been approved, I thought I'd say my goodbyes. Farewell to a building that predates most of its surrounds and leaves a village with no social outlet.

Willeymoor Lock Tavern, Bradeley Green A long overdue re-visit to this homely freehouse on the Llangollen Canal. Used to regularly call in delivering the OutInn Cheshire CAMRA magazine. Glad to say little has changed. A good pint and, as ever, a lively chat with the owners!

Charlie bored by the lack of late night customers in the Albion yesterday despite both Taylor's Boltmaker and Landlord Dark (aka Ram Tam) being on great form. Tinsel drinkers must be imminent.

Pub Sign of the Week: Bridge Inn, Rochdale. A nice depiction of the 1865 "Red Flag Act". Not sure if this pub is still open or is another one struck down by the whims of Sir Humphrey. #PubSignThursday

Bloody hell. How sad. Absolutely one of my all-time favourite cricketers. That ferocious square-cut. RIP Judge.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of legendary batter Robin Smith. Known as 'The Judge', Smith played over 600 times for Hampshire and scored over 30,000 runs for the club in a career that spanned more than 20 years. Our thoughts are with his family and

A visit to the Royal Oak, Kelsall. A large, handsome pub of red-brick and mock-Tudor. Lovely and warm inside with a pleasing clutter of tasteful furniture, potted plants, globe chandeliers and Arts & Crafts style wallpaper. Marvellous radiant Christmas tree too. Liked it a lot.

Pub Sign of the Week: Horse & Groom, Ningwood. An elegant, colourful piece of art from the Isle of Wight (c2004). Sadly now replaced by a seemingly more hip (or cheaper) monochrome design (though I've seen worse). #PubSignThursday

Pub Sign of the Week: Frozen Mop, Mobberley An apt choice for this sub-zero November day. Off the beaten track. Occasionally called in here en route to watch Chester in their exile seasons playing in Macc. Been closed since 2023 due to excessive overheads. #PubSignThursday

Pub Sign of the Week: The Mount, Kingstanding, Birmingham From 2011 this one. Brings back happy memories of the tree climbing days of my youth. The pub is now an Indian restaurant. #PubSignThursday

Pub Sign of the Week: The Zetland, Southport When pub signs were good. I reckon the bloke on the right has spotted a pub. After a few days at sea, surely a welcome sight. The pillaging can wait. #PubSignThursday

Cambridge United 3-0 Chester. FA Cup 1R. Att: 4,329 (away 1,231) A miserable afternoon at the Abbey Stadium. Absolutely nothing to cheer for the brilliant travelling support. Best bit was the impeccably observed remembrance tribute.

Pub Sign of the Week: Pendle Witch, Sabden, Lancashire A nod to Halloween though it means nothing to my generation other than it being a largely US imported commercial opportunity exploited by the supermarkets. Make Guy Fawkes Night (and pub signs) great again. #PubSignThursday

Pub Sign of the Week: General Eliott, Croft, Cheshire Named after a Scots born 18C British army officer most famous for his command during the siege of Gibraltar by France and Spain. A teetotaller who died from drinking too much mineral water (so says Wiki). #PubSignThursday

The window cleaner is due today. I've had to evict my gorgeous Cross Orbweaver from outside the kitchen to spare her from the squeegee or a tsunami of suds. I feel like an utter bastard. She's been patiently there in her wondrous web for weeks. What a shit start to Monday.
