IT'S HERE! My dissertation! After five insane yrs there's now this: 300 pages of dark matter history! Printed on paper made of 100% agricultural waste 🌱 Oh, and I'll be defending this 'lil book NEXT WEEK!! ⚔️

Dark-matter histories typically center on observations by Fritz Zwicky and Vera Rubin. But equally important, writes @JGdeSwart in #PhysicsToday, was the 1974 realization that they implied that the universe was “missing” a large quantity of matter. https://t.co/azHp2oMuTw 📸:

A struggle ensued to get their conclusion published: that there might be halos, or coronas, of invisible mass surrounding all galaxies! In Estonia, they even had to deal with KGB! 🕵️

In the then Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, Jaan Einasto wasn't getting his galaxy models to fit the data. And in the U.S., Princeton astrophysicist Jerry Ostriker was puzzled by why galaxies existed in the first place. 🌌

I worked out the story of how, 50 years ago, teams in the US and Estonia independently concluded that the universe is filled with dark matter--or missing mass, as it was known. 🇺🇸🇪🇪

Who will I see at the EASST/4S conference in Amsterdam next week? 🛰️ Come hang out at my organized session on Un/Clean Science! We'll sweep through cases of science depending on clean and cleanliness 🧹 My talk? Cleaning a dark matter detector! 🧼 https://t.co/HJFanQnzGU
